This is going to be a very stupid question no doubt, but how can a dam be at 160%? surely if it has the capacity of 160% that should be the 100% figure.

I have absolutely no idea about how this dam is constructed or anything but I'm just interested on how it works ...

Sorry for being dense...

This is just a guess but I reckon the "supply capacity" relates to what can be extracted from the dam using the various pumps and pipes installed. The actual capacity could also include the water below the pumps that cannot be extracted. The pumps may not be located right at the bottom due to the "terrain" of the dam floor, and also because the water at the bottom may be siltier or anaerobic and thus not fit for use.

the problem is also the somerset dam. this dam sits behind the wivenhoe dam (brisbanes main dam) and this is also at 150% plus. so this dam needs to release water also which will feed into the wivenhoe dam.

Correct , operating capacity < flood mitigation capacity.

Spillway is at full capacity and therefore dam itself starts to back up

Hasn't rained for nigh on 3 hours! Same story last night, then it hammered us from about 10pm to 7am, and again abt 10am. Hopefully a reprieve??

Not looking forward to the commute to & particularly from work tomorrow (high tide in arvo). Still - it'll be a doddle compared to what Toowoomba, Esk, Dalby, etc have been through.

I've just heard that they're shutting power to the whole of the CBD tomorrow, assuming that's where you work?

Trying to convince the in laws who go back to Brisbane tomorrow to not try and make the trek back to Dalby, they are convinced they are going to do it though as they havent been home for a week, so their house isnt prepared for this.

If we keep getting all of this rain, surely it has a chance to affect the many towns on the Murray. One can only hope it doesn't get to that situation but after what has happened up North, who knows.

It will eventually flow into the Murray-Darling basin, but hopefully it won't coincide with heavy rainfall in regional SA.

Most will flow east into the pacific.

Plenty will still flow west of the dividing range and end up into SA in about 3 months time.

Locals in the Bridge are talking up levels reaching the 56 flood but I think they are dreaming.
Might get to 93 levels or worse 74 but never 56.

I hope they take your advice whufc or even better still, stay here another week or so until everything hopefully calms down up there. Wish them the best of luck from me and probably everyone else.

Just been on the adelaidenow website and have been reading some comments on the Brisbane floods. Some people saying this is the governments fault and they have had 34 years to fix flooding in this city. Little do people know that dont live in this state/city that Wivenhoe Dam was built after the 1974 floods and if wivenhoe was not there then Brisbane would be not existant today. I dont normally stand up for governments at all but its not their fault. When you have a combination of water being released upstream and a king high tide coming in from the sea the water needs to go some where. Brisbane lies in the middle of this hence the reason there is panic at the moment. The peak is due this afternoon at 3pm and also tomorrow at 3pm when the high tide is in.

For those of you who know Ipswich the peak of the Bremer River is expected to reach 22m today, it was 19m in 1974. The water is at present over Brisbane Street near Coles and the East Street almost all the way up to the Centrelink (opposite Council headquarters) is underwater.

Mrs REB has been an absolute champion working at the evac centre in the Ippy showground and my boys aren't all that impressed with my cooking but they could get another serving of crap a la REB tonight.

Ipswich is cut off to the East and West and the Trumpy Bridge is impassable and it could go under today. Unbelievable.

regards,

REB
