Will relay the happenings in date order in that year
Throughout this thread I will introduce a happening, and we can proceed with a discussion

January 4
Glynn and Daryl Hewitt got clearances from WA to Woodville

GLYNN HEWITT
Was a very very good SANFL full forward
He also played at Richmond in the AFL
Played at WA/WDV and ended up at SA in the SANFL
Kicked a lot goals
My recollection was he was a good lead up forward
He did something in 1980 that ensured the Family name would continue on ...

DARYL HEWITT
Prolific kickgetter , and did play for that great AFL club St Kilda !
Also is a successful thoroughbred race horse trainer in SA

QUESTIONS
Who was the better footballer Daryl or Glynn ?
How good was thier dad Max who played at WA around the 1950s ?
Why did the brothers leave WA to play at Woodville ?

Glynn was certainly the better player in my opinion. He was a long kick too, though not highly accurate, where Darryl was inclined to kick up chimneys.
I never saw Max play.
My recollection is that it was yet another clash of personalities between Glynn and Fos Williams that saw the Hewitts leave. I don't think Glynn was a good fit for Fos's style of footy. Darryl played mainly on the half back flank for us and I think it's fair to say he improved markedly as a footballer after he left us.

I only saw the Hewitt's in the latter stages of their careers I guess, but I always felt Glynn was much the better player and Darryl was average at best.

That could well be my hazy memory, or the memory of kid who still didn't know enough about the game.

Glynn was an exciting player to watch
Daryl was a good ballgetter and didnt stand out as much
So in the SANFL definately Glynn as the better footballer
However in the VFL Daryl did ok , whereas I cant recall Glynn excelling himself
Being a SK barracker, I used to watch Daryl more, and I reckon he did rather well
Glynn played for RI and I dont recall him kicking the bags of goals that he was renown for doing in the SANFL

JANUARY 5
28 Year old Port Adelaide Ruckman Paul Marrett quit the club
Marrett, 138 games , continued his career at West Gambier

MARRETT
Big Paul was a good ruckman for the Magpies
He often rucked with Leon Milde back in the 70s
The one thing that stood out about the big fella was that mob of hair he used to Parade
I reckon Paul played State footy ?

28 Year old Port Adelaide Ruckman Paul Marrett quit the club
Marrett, 138 games , continued his career at West Gambier

MARRETT
Big Paul was a good ruckman for the Magpies
He often rucked with Leon Milde back in the 70s
The one thing that stood out about the big fella was that mob of hair he used to Parade

He did a pre season with West Torrens then went back to Port a much better player.

Glynn and Darryl both played for West, Woodville and South. Glynn also played 15 games for Richmond and Darryl 26 for St Kilda. Glynn was certainly the more stylish, but Darryl was a great kickgetter, having 27 and 28 kicks in successive matches for the Saints ( he wasn't too flash on the handball). After retiring from South, Darryl played for the beautifully-named Perponda Grass Parrots.

JANUARY 6
There were rumours that WA player, rover, Jim Buckley wanted to play for South Gambier
WA claimed that Buckley had signed a 2 year contract, that ended speculation on Buckley leaving

I know its not the Jim Buckley that played for Carlton in the 80s

Jim Buckley was probably my favourite player from that era. He was recruited from Port Melbourne as a centreman, where I believe he'd won their B&F. He played a lot of footy for us as a forward, including at Full Forward, despite being only 5'9. He was very very clever, highly skilled, very strong overhead and was a beautiful kick on either side of his body. He had the Brian Cunningham ability to kick for goal from set shots with his left foot or right.
He taught at Adelaide High and then, when his SANFL career finished, moved to Mt Gambier where he still lives. Both of his boys played junior footy with Westies and one, Caolan, played some League.

no idea but he was in that photo with all the boys .After the thrilling 1 point win at Unley.And I was there West Torrens hadn't won there in decades and under Knuckles they won by a point the same amount they won by the last time!!!.
I think Jackman only played in 78/79

Russell Ebert says he will decide within the week if he will play at Port Adelaide this year

Greg Croser quits as a Glenelg player
Croser played 64 games
He quit so he could become the Captain Coach at Mclaren Vale

He ended up playing a few more seasons at Port
That decison was he looking at another club[surely not]or was he contemplating retiring ?
Who was the better overall player EBERT or Nathan BUCKLEY ? an interesting question
Perhaps if Ebert went to play in the AFL at a youger age, we could all answer this question perhaps
I will say this much, EBERT the best PA SANFL player Ive seen

CROSER
I seem to recall Greg Croser standing Phil Carman in a final at Adelaide oval ?
As I recollect he played in defence and gave Carman a bath that day, and Im sure GL won that final in the 70s ?
Did he play as a full forward at times ?
Croser had a real 70s hairdo, looked more like a pop singer with his locks of blonde hair, than a footballer
Did he have success at Mclaren Vale ? [Did he coach Mclaren Vale legend Jackpot Jim perhaps ?]

Croser then played a season for Westies in 1979 and was quite handy in a pretty dreadful side.
