Pots get hotter due to the sun on their sides, so they tend to dry out.
Plants in the ground tend to need less care.
Leave enough room to stack a couple of inches of bark on top to keep in moisture, hold the weeds down, and make them easier to pull up when they do start to grow.

We have had a pretty hard 18 months guys.

Lost most of my front lawn.

My back only survived because I illegally watered. :oops:

Lost about $1000 worth of pigmy date palms around the pool which I have to budget for to replace.

I feel guilty because we were not allowed to water our plants but were allowed to top up the pool... :shock: :roll:

The answer is to mulch, mulch, mulch.

Everything I mulched, survived.

It's only Money $$$ :)
