exactly thats my point, Fergusons not in that great of form either, there are 6 other players this season who have hit more runs at a better average than he has. Plus another 20 odd who are averaging more but havent hit as many runs.

I see it as Blind loyalty to South Aussies, who tend to always think they are so hard done by, refer to Adelaide United soccer thread and Crows football thread as further evidence. Its the umpire fault in those thread and in the cricket thread its the selectors fault the South Aussies cant get in.

I think it goes back to the non selections of Jamie Siddons and Darren Lehmann who i do think were hard done by but that doesnt mean every south aussie is, it gives me the runs.

I think the SA public have taken his Ryobi Cup form into consideration aswell.

Whats the fascination with South Australians thinking Ferguson is so hard done by.

First class averages

Ferguson- 35.62, 100's-6 in 99 innings, HS-132
Smith- 41.25, 100's- 4 in 40 innings, HS-177

Ferguson's 4 day playing career is average at best, based on performances their would probably be 20 blokes ahead of him.

Exactly!

I love Fergie but his stats don't match up to other guys, he's gotta string 1 or 2 solid seasons in the Sheffield Shield to even be considered for selection, did his knee just at the wrong time I reckon.

Smith however should not be in the team as a batter....Dave Hussey hard done by? Whats Cameron Whites figures this year?

What's Clarke's average in tests? Pretty good. It's current form people look at. Do we judge Ferguson on what he did 99 innings ago?

That's where the selectors are caught between a rock and a hard place and have no "set" plan. Yes, both of the players you mentioned would be around the mark but i think the selectors look at their ages and they become over-looked.
I don't think they know whether they are re-building/ blooding youth or trying to win games as they face them. I'd love to see what they are thinking, do we play to win each game now or look to the future and regain the number 1 status.

Even taking just current form into account there would be another 4 blokes ahead of him.

Those stats i gave where the leading run scorers, there were a few other blokes who have a better average this season than Ferguson but havent hit as many runs.

Pretty simple. Pick the top two runscorers.
If cosgrove is next in line pick him. Gotta pick guys while they are in form
Ps
Cosgrove will NEVER get picked even if he makes 1500 this season

Ferguson has it harder than most of the rest in that list because he doesn't get to play against SA.

your more than likely correct.

Its a shame really because you like at a bloke like Shane Watson who is built like an athlete yet his running between wickets is terrible and his never allowed to run at 100% due to his injury issues (according to one of the commentators during the ashes)

Yet a bigger bloke like Cosgrove who i personally have never seen him be run out or run anyone else out cant get a gig because of his size. He has pretty good hands in the slips as well.

LUNCH
AU 8/230
MJ 30*
HILF 14*

I must say the last 30-40 minutes have been puzzling
AU on the ropes 8/189
MJ not taking singles to keep HiLF off strike, now thats dopey
Then STRAUSS puts a stack of players on the fence when MJ was facing, now thats even dopier
A third man for HILF astounds me, the score is 8 for farrrk all not 8/500+, that was dopeyish

Extremely poor captaining by Strauss, has contributed to AU getting some momentum
Who knows if HILF + MJ keep playing shots and last a while, AU might make a fist of this Test still

was very defensive by Strauss, would have thought he would back his bowlers in against Johnson with the newish ball and a pitch that is offering a little.

3. NSW
4. NSW
5. WA
6. NSW
7. NSW

there could very well be about 8 in the oz side from NSW at the one time in the not too distant future.
Guys like Starc, Maddinson, copeland, hazelwood, maybe o'keefe.
Don't mind them getting a go, it's just the Cassons, Hauritz, Robertsons, Emerys, Hollands of the world that annoy me.

Add Smith to that 2nd list aswell and I'm with you. If we don't have a world class spinner, don't play one, I think Clarke bowls good enough offies to be able to go with 6 batsmen, a keeper and 4 seamers, maybe one of the other 6 batsmen could have some bowling capabilities. The poms have only picked 3 seamers and Swann in all of their tests so far and used Collingwood & Pietersen when required with reasonable success. They bowl with intent and think outside the square occasionally.

Another relevant batting statistic for the shield - average:

Highest averages
Player Runs HS Ave
MJ Clarke 152 113 152.00
MG Johnson 121 121* 121.00
PM Nevill 271 108* 90.33
UT Khawaja 598 214 74.75
AB McDonald 372 163 74.40
CJ Duval 142 87 71.00
SE Marsh 414 137 59.14
MJ Cosgrove 510 159 56.66
NJ Maddinson 365 137 52.14
CA Lynn 461 142* 51.22

Seems as if we are going to use shield stats as a basis for warranting whilst people should be in the test side based on stats one person has just as much claim as anyone.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
