Just need Hilf and Hadds to hang around for 5 and a half sessions, runs aren't important.

Interesting sms just sent to the ABC radio commentators, stated that if Australia win the last test, the series is a draw and means England have won absolutely nothing, possibly quite correct, they haven't won the Ashes this series, just retained it, Interesting thoughts by someone I guess

We need to take a leaf out of South Africa, they promote their batsmen at an early age ala Smith, AB De Villiers, Prince, JP Duminy, and give them an extended run in the side working around the more experience players of the time.

Then when the experienced blokes have retired the younger guys have 20-30 tests under their belt and are ready to step up knowing what test cricket is like and what their in for.

This is one reason South Africa are managing to cover for their departed stars of the past era.

And those that can't make the South African team, go play for England.

You do know that Duminy isn't worthy of a spot in Saffers side at the moment? Was picking Clarke (23) for his debut at a younger age than Duminy (24) when he debuted a wrong move by the Australian selectors at the time??

I do believe in the basic tennant of your post though we need to identfy some talented youngsters an give them an extended run int eh side a la Boon, S Waugh, M Hughes etc in the mid 80s and give them a chacne to develp their games at the higher level. Time for a tap on the shoulder for some of our experienced players >35 years of age and Katich shouldn't get a game again.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I think the selection of Clarke at the time was perfect as we needed to inject some youth into what was an old batting line-up, just imho his technique hasnt really improved over time and he still has the same flaws as he did when he debuted.

Like you said i dont think this is the time to recycle players such as Katich, Hodge etc etc we now need to inject the next lot of 5-10 year players into the side even if that means some more short term pain.

Absolutely pathetic. When guys like siddle put their head down and show more spine than the number 3 and 4 you know your in trouble. Siddle would have to be close this series in runs to our supposed guns.

Surely the axe must be hovering over Hughes, Ponting, Clarke and Smith. Not forgetting Harris's injury there must be at least three changes. Hughes gets another go if Katich doesn't come up or, if Katich does come up drop Watson to five, open with Hughes and Katich, move Hussey to three. Clarke probably remains in at four, Ferguson comes in for the horribly over-rated Smith and bats at six, Haddin at seven, Hauritz replaces Harris. My team to look like this (in batting order):

Katich
Hughes
Hussey
Clarke
Watson
Ferguson
Haddin
Johnson
Hauritz
Siddle
Hilfenhaus

I know what you're saying, but I think it's fair to suggest the Poms attacked Ponting and Clarke with a lot more venom than they did Siddle. By the time Siddle came in the Poms were discussing where to go and celebrate.

I agree with that side, but the fact is ponting will not be dropped. However it may well be his last test.
Clarke needs the axe. Although I dont believe Smith batted badly, he is definitly not the best number 6 lurking in shield cricket.
Ferg has not earned a crack at it in my opinion, I know neither has hughes for that matter.
Read my reply. It is directed at you because you have double standards

I was lucky enough to be out drinking with the English players Wednesday night (well Thursday morning ;) ) and I can honestly say its very much a feeling of mission accomplished, as much as they are very keen to finish it up 3-1, I can't see them being to distraught if it was to end 2-2
