I haven't seen Beer, so I can't comment. I'm just worried that they got rid of Doherty because he wasn't up to it, and then replaced him with a similar type. I seriously doubt the effectiveness of lem arm orthodox bowling in the Test arena. Does anyone know if Beer can bowl a chinaman?

Finger spinner mate, all out the front of the hand, I don't think anyone has seen enough of him to comment. Interesting comment on radio tonight, last time G. Chappell was selector Peter (who) Taylor was picked from Sydney Grade to play Test Cricket. Fingers crossed. I think he is the 9th or 10th spinner tried to replace the great man since he retired.

The selectors are taking the p!ss right? Obviously form has no bearing on the selectors decision to select Hughes, Beer and Johnson? Surely Ferguson must've gone close to getting North's spot? Instead, the over-rated Steve Smith gets a crack.

Thats what should be happening to the Aust selectors, cant wait to see Johnno bring us back into the Ashes,. let alone a couple of others that have been selected, on form Johnno will take 5 in each innings, Hughes who cant score a run in Shield cricket will get tons in each innings, whoi knows what Smith may do and people are saying Beer will carry the drinks, not sure thats the right move, will they be coopers, crownies, west end, swan lager or what ;)

Aus selectors have shown weakness in their squad, in my opinion they have said "Hey England, we dont think we can take 20 wickets to win a match, and we cant smack enough runs to stop you winning so we will go with overkill of bowlers and leave out another specialist bat."

Obviously preparing for another long period in the field..

The problem I have is if Smith gets smacked around knuckleheads like Hilditch will start trotting out "yeah but ya know Warnie got smacked around earlier in his career too" like Smith is some sort of potential Shane Warne. The selectors will just back him in regardless of what he does, not a bad gig that.

Where as Hauritz comes back from injury and in two Tests in India the #1 ranked side in the world with the best batsman in the world and takes 6 wickets at 65 where guys like Warne, Murali & Vettori all struggled thoughtout their careers, bang gone. Doherty gets two Tests on home soil against the #5 ranked side in the world takes 3 wickets at 102, bang gone.

Smith's going to be able to spend the next couple of years playing with house money I bet Hauritz & Doherty wish they could've been afforded such a luxury.

Doherty didnt get in the side on ability, he got in on public admiration after he took that 4 wickets and cricket aus seen they could make a quick buck off him

GOZu - I think you raise some good points.

To be fair, Hauritz didn't have decent stats to deserve a recall once Krezja was dropped, so I reckon he had some good play money too.
Hauritz has been dropped twice now......surely he'd be struggling to be picked again.

Doherty was just a crap, crap, crap, crap selection.
He's just a toiler at shield level and HIlditch takes the blame for this choice.

With Smith, I reckon he will get more opportunities that you suggest he will because he is young and very talented.
He's agreat fielder, useful bat and handy leggie,, exactly how Richie Benaud was when he started according to Chappelli.

The players are the only ones that can stop the slide. Ponting & Clarke need to show some leadership with the bat (Clarke made a good start on this with his second innings dig), and they need to take every opportunity in the field.

Make the forced change for Katich. Take the same lineup into Perth and tell them all the pull their ******* fingers out.

Exactly the players are the ones with ball and bat in hand.... Im not one for massive changes, but IMO North has had his chances and we loose little from giving someone else a chance! it may pay off it may not

Im still not sold on their replacements either! Usman, Ferg, Hughes have all been less than impressive of late. Usman has a chance today however.

Lesser names such as Cowan and Lynn etc have made some scores, Smith not ready to bat at 6 or 7 and White  has done sweet FA.

interesting selction coming up for sure.

I don't think that we strike while the iron's hot, last year Usman and Klinger were on fire, they could be semi-established test players by now, you see it year in year out, players and selectors miss too many windows of opportunity and then the form is lost by the time they act upon it.

=D> =D> Spot on

North should have gone while Khawaja was in red hot form. Unfortunately no one appears to be making consistent scores at shield level at the moment. Lets hope Ferg can string some good scores together and force his way in.

This is why I'm down on the selectors at the moment. I argued the toss on another forum about Doherty a couple of seasons ago when he couldn't get a game with Tasmania and was thinking of coming to Adelaide. I said at the time Doherty wasn't a 1st class cricketer, to me it was obvious but a trio of highly credentialled Test selectors thought he was worth a spot in the Australian team!!! Just how poor are these guys at spotting talent?

Khawaja- 8 innings, 1 hundred, three fifties, averaging seventy-plus
McDonald (before injury)- 5 innings, three hundreds, averaging 93, strike rate 87
Fergie- 3 matches, two hundreds, averaging in the 60's
The Blizzard- two hundeds and a fifty from nine innings- average near fifty.

These are the guys who should be looking to come into the side, not Hughes or Smith...

I like the idea of having 4 seamers. Harris who I thought was injuried has good pace and control and will be at them. He was the pick of the bowlers in Adelaide. The only problem is Smith needs to be discipline and not let a few slip and get belted. Anyway our batting looks thin, but then again, these days it always does.
