Bowling was always going to be under scrutiny whoever they picked, I'm just glad that North's candle has burnt out.

Two hundreds in three SS games and 2 hundreds in4 odd games since comeback. What more do you want

Two 2nd innings tons mate, could've gone on and posted a big score. Usman has been good for 14 months, Smith has just been blessed with good fortune, I wouldn't have him in front of either.

What an absolute joke. At a time we can bring in a form batsman into the top 6 top, we go for the selectors little lover boy Hughes. Hughes is averaging under 20 this year in the Shield. How can u pick someone who is not in form. I dont care what his future holds, surely you try and pick the infrom players. S.Marsh,Fergusson and Khwaja. Steve Smith to bat 6 what a joke. Lets face it the selectors need sacking and have so for some time.

Seriously just when you think our rubbish selectors couldn't get any worse. What's the point of dropping North if you're only going to replace him with a far worse batsman in Steve Smith? Oh that's right he can bowl leggies, next Shane Warne! Beer, WTF? Hauritz just peels off 150 with the bat and took 7 wickets at the WACA last week but no. 60+ Test wickets at 35, not good enough to earn a spot in this magnificent Australian side. Mitchell Johnson is 0/170 in this Ashes series so far, hasn't played anywhere since he was dropped, welcome back Mitch.

Sometimes i feel dirty and unpatriotic that i choose not to support Australia in the cricket. Then the selectors pull something out of their backsides like they have done today and it helps reaffirm that decision i have made previously. What an absolute joke.

Hilditch must be on the take.

The ridiculous 'Bring back Warnie' chant in this mornings paper has more credibility than the 3rd Test squad.

Hilditch should have got in before Beer and Smith.
He can put spin on anything.

NSP Chairman Andrew Hilditch said:

“Phillip Hughes replaces the injured Simon Katich in the squad for the third Test match in Perth. Phil is an exciting young batsman who has already proven his ability to succeed at international level and he deserves this opportunity to return to the Australian side.

“Steve Smith replaces Marcus North in the 12-man squad. This is obviously disappointing for Marcus who has played some outstanding Test innings for Australia but it was felt to be the right time to bring the exciting prospect Steve Smith into the Test team. Steve has already had success at international level and will also add to the bowling depth with his leg spin bowling and dynamic fielding.

“Michael Beer replaces Xavier Doherty in the squad. Michael is a left-arm orthodox spinner who has been very impressive at domestic level this year. He took wickets against England in the tour match earlier this summer and we expect he will bowl very well against the English on his home ground.

“Doug Bollinger has been omitted from the squad. Both Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus did not play in Adelaide but will be strongly considered for selection in the Perth Test match where conditions will suit them. Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle were the pick of our quicks at Adelaide Oval and these four make up the pace attack for the Perth Test match.

“The squad is a very exciting one with a blend of talented young players and experienced international cricketers. We are confident it will play an aggressive brand of cricket as we try to change the momentum of the Test series in this critical Vodafone Ashes Perth Test match.”

The Australian squad will gather in Perth on Sunday evening. Details of the team’s training and media schedule and accreditation collection details in Perth will be forwarded on Sunday on arrival.

Weakest batting line-up I have ever seen.

Neither Ferg or Usman makes the squad? PATHETIC.

So the spinner with the best figures in australia doesnt get picked but some unknown does. Why pick a guy for australia A who was australias man of the match and who had it all over kp and the other poms? I thought that was a good audition but no the selectors ignore him twice to select doherty and beer. What a joke.

11 wickets in 5 matches at 39. Hardly set the world on fire.
I doubt very much he even would've been considered if Warnie hadn't gone public and named him.

This from cricinfo - A left-arm spinner who toiled at club level in Melbourne for several seasons, Michael Beer moved to Western Australia during the 2010 off season as the Warriors searched for a frontline spinner. He took five wickets for the match against the touring England side in 2010-11 and was a shock selection in Australia's squad for the Perth Test in December, despite having made only five first-class appearances.

Can someone please explain to me why the leading shield wicket taker with a career of 57 wickets in 9 matches at 18 can't get a game ?
Is he too young at 24 ?

Khawaja - Leading the shield runs aggregate with 499 runs @ 71. At 24 years of age is he too young to be picked also.
