What happens there?

Nathan Ahmat-watkins is a pretty handy kid!

And that train on squad, would that be related to GWS and their participation in the NAB cup this season coming?

Not quite Hawthorn and Richmond haven't named all their rookies yet so each club has three players training on for the one spot. One of those train on players in Travis Tuck. How this works or is allowed I have NFI.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Reckon the Crows have not used all their rookie places, would Templeton have a chance for the last spot?

Something to do with the preseason (March) rookie draft they are implementing?

The rookie draft is a complete rort. It's simply a way for clubs to extend their lists without having to pay the players or their clubs of origin properly. I doubt that state leagues protesting would have a big impact but the Players' Association might. I wish someone would kick up a stink about it.

Ends up going in the rookie draft to GWS a year before they begin and the Gold Coast weren't even interested.

What a waste of time for him.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

What, getting back onto an AFL list and having an opportunity to play for a new AFL side in 2012...

I spoke with Joffa today and can assure you, he doesn't see it as a waste of time...

Happy for him to get on an AFL list, would rather see him actually in the AFL next year though.

May as well play SANFL for another season IMO.

I've been saying the same thing for some time, particularly since they removed the age limit. Nice to see somebody agree with me. ;)

I think most have agreed with nickname's view. It's just a way of "exploiting" the players. Clubs know it would be difficult for any footballer to knock back a "potential" opportunity to play football at the highest level.

its about time this big money the AFL is getting is given back to the clubs that produce this talent

these clubs have to compensated with larger upfront payments for the time and money they invest in these young lads

Might be time for the clubs to demand a fixed percentage of all AFL revenue is paid as compensation for draft picks, in the same way as the AFLPA demands a fixed percentage of AFL revenue for total player payments. :D

Just out of interest, given all the draft talk, I compiled some draft figures (as accurately as I could).

From 2000-2009 I came up with the following number of players drafted (all drafts) from each club. I've tried not to double count players like Paul Thomas that went from Adelaide rookie list to Essendon, or Brad Symes, Scott Welsh types that went from one AFL club straight to another.

The results were:

South 6, Sturt 11, Norwood 15, WWT 17, Glenelg 18, North 18, Port 20, Central 23, West 24.

**The figures are incomplete as I'm not sure about the rookie drafts in 2007, 2001 and 2002. 2007 I accounted for WWT1, 2002 -Norwood 2, WA 1 Pal 1 and CD1, in 2001 CD 2. As it didn't list where the players were from, so it would require updating.

Now if 2010 is included after Norwood "lost" 8, I get

South 6, Sturt 14, WWT 20, North 20, Glenelg 20, Norwood 23, Port 24, Central 24, West 26.

I attempted to cross check with the SANFL benchmark doc. but it didn't include rookies only elevated rookies. I'm sure Norwood believe a rookie listed player is still a loss.

Really shows our complete lack of depth with juniors!

The stat in their defence DOC is they have the second least amount of junor teams to pick players from. South have about 175 teams whereas Sturt (252), Glenelg (248), North (246) Norwood (210) which is about 1700 players less to chose from. Unfortunately the counter, to this point is Centrals have the least 150 and West the third least with about 180, and Port fourth least, yet these three clubs have had the most players drafted over the decade.
Maybe this would help to answer the question on 5aa depending on the inference.
