SANFL Mini-Draft for Interstate AFL Draftees

Does anyone know when the SANFL holds the mini draft and who would South be looking at picking first up?

I believe Sam Martyn was allocated to the Eagles in the 2008 SANFL internal draft.

Having seen many of these draftees this season, my guess - and its only that, based on what the clubs are looking for, their needsd, expected time they may spend with their SANFL club etc - is that South would take Ben Jacobs with pick one. Great skills in close and moves smoothly through the midfield when given a licence to run.

Confirmed with SANFL that the internal mini-draft will be held on the 15 December, as yet, time has not been decided.

SA CELEBRATES BEST-EVER ROOKIE DRAFT
South Australia has enjoyed its best AFL Rookie Draft result ever, with 13 local players picked up in today’s Draft.

The South Australians represented 17.5 per cent of all rookies drafted this year – the largest local contingent since the Draft’s inception in 1997.

The result easily eclipsed the previous best for the state (11 players, representing 15.3 per cent of the total in 2009).

SANFL High Performance Manager Brenton Phillips said the increase of local draftees indicated a healthy talent pathway in the state.

“Today’s result is a testament to our local talent and the work the SANFL and its clubs put into developing these players,” Mr Phillips said.

“South Australia’s representation at the AFL National Draft and Rookie Draft continues to be very strong.

“We congratulate all of our players who have been drafted, elevated or rookie listed in 2010.”

Today’s outcome also marks 2010 as the best year since 1998 in terms of local players selected for a main or rookie AFL list.

It is expected that 31-draftee result of 1998 will be equalled in coming weeks, given the pre-signing of Jack Hombsch by GWS and the anticipated pre-signing of two other players to new AFL clubs.

Throw in a Bowen Lockwood and Jacob Surjan who also played some very good league games for the Dogs.

I think I mentioned it else where, but I spotted Ron Fuller as an interested onlooker at Crows training last week, obviously doing his due dilligence on who South might pick.

Blessing in disguise for Norwood. Having had no-one on an AFL list in their GF team (admittedly one missing b/c of injury), we're now looking likely to have 3 AFL-listed players in our round 1 team: Young (subject to his recovery), Phillips, Jonas. Centrals' success for many years has, in part, been built on not relying on too many AFL listed players as part of their best 21 (because they can be taken away at a moment's notice, especially when hitting top form). We don't need any more.

Admittedly, if there had been a pick 8, the least-desired AFL draftee would have probably just played 2s in 2011 anyway, but sometimes you get a surprise, like Aaron Kite was circa '08.

Mark McKenzie is a good example of what good can come from the mini-draft. Yes, you may get a dud, but for every 10 duds if we got one McKenzie I'd be happy.

Ryan Williams is similar situation at Central (although not as long serving as Mackenzie) in that he stayed at the club he was mini-drafted to even after his AFL career was over.

Whether he sticks around or not, having someone with the ability at a young age to get onto a list can only be good if they are managed right. If SANFL clubs that had AFL listed players around managed them better then we might think of the mini draft in a totally different light.

Never said anything about them being good Graham, just mentioning Daniel was one whufc didn't list...

Based on whufc's list, Central seem to have done alright compared with other clubs which is interesting considering they usually have the last few pick(s) in the mini-draft...
