I doubt that the Power moving to Adelaide Oval will make much difference at all.
I'd be surprised if it increased their attendance numbers, and any cost savings will be wasted somewhere..

I support the saving of money through sharing admin, etc, that I have no problem with and that's where it should stop.

1) The new "one club" is merely 2 words and doesn't clear anything up or amalgamate any history, simple fact of the matter is the Magpies who won 37 premierships are the club that plays in black and white, the only thing different is they're now owned by the Power who are in turn owned by the SANFL and its clubs. Players playing in the magpies last season with a 2 year contract wont need to sign a new contract as they'll be playing for exactly the same club (just like people who played with the Magpies the year before the Power came in didn't have to get new contracts made up when the Magpies changed their official name). This new arrangement does nothing to bring clubs together or help them share history in anyway, if anything its even more confused now.

2) Come Round 23 of a year, the Port Magpies are playing the Eagles, whoever wins gets their 11th win for the year and the other club will fail to make the finals. Both clubs have shown exceptional late season for and are both a real chance at the flag despite being evenly matched. The Power had a great year and are also playing in the AFL finals on the same weekend, the final is in Brisbane so they want to take an extra player as a precaution. They have the choice of taking Brett Ebert or Paul Stewart.
It is a very low chance of any player playing so the only real difference is:

a) take Ebert and give the Magpies a less chance of making the finals, less chance of winning a flag and less money for the Power who own the Magpies
or:
b) take Stewart and give the Magpies more of a chance of making the finals, winning a flag and making a heap more money for the Power who own the Magpies.

Who would they take?
Is this even important who they take and it is the simple fact that there would be a HUGE conflict of interest if this situation arose?
Whilst this is an extreme example less extreme examples could be common place.

I'm sure this would have been thought of by the other SANFL clubs, one can only assume there may have been a very large pressure (some might call it blackmail) from an outside influence to ensure the clubs voted for the possibility of the above scenario.

What happens when another SANFL club is near death? Will they be allowed the same business model to merge with the crows?

I dont want any SANFL club to fall over but the fact is, some SANFL clubs are really struggling financially

On the Adelaide Oval - Sign a 5 year deal and see if the model is accurate or just Spin learnt from the State ALP. If the numbers stack up then sign a long term deal - If not, we return to Footy Park. Why commit long term and dig a hole we may not be able to escape from. Proceed with caution SANFL

That will be one of a few questions I put to the Sturt GM and President.

Sturt are one of those clubs living year to year, we're always leveraged up to like 99% of our value, just ticking over with no real bright light in the future where we suddenly come out financially strong... we're not on our knees and about to close, but we're certainly not in a position where we can afford any mistakes.

So if things should go sour, is the league going to save us or throw us to the wolves to get an 8 team comp?

If there's nothing in writing, then I think all 8 clubs have sold themselves out.

Within 3 weeks of implementation, last nights' announcement about Gordon Pickard has added credence to the PAFC Merger Proposal after all. Funny that.

To use the words of a very famous Port Adelaide person...

Luck you've got a rich guy backing you and it's nice that Port supporters have never commented that another club would be nothing without a rich guys millions.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Major difference being, OUR Rich Guy isn't a Port Adelaide supporter. Therefore he had to be thoroughly convinced we were on the right track prior to tipping in.

And the Port Adelaide Financial Plan could guarantee a $100K weekly dividend, hand delivered to each club in cash, and you bunch of Perpetually, Paranoid, Whingers would still complain about the denomination.

Another one of the scenarios that will see the Magpies wrapped up in a few years.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I put this question to a friend who is lifelong Port supporter ( well he added teal to his list of favourite colours  ) earlier this year and his reply was

" &*$k them. This is Port Adelaide we are talking about "

One set of rules for them, and another for all of us 8-}

I certainly hope so. But only if that Business Model includes the Crows moving to the other side of their oval and changing to the same name as the club in question.

Wasn't Pickard the bloke who was going to buy the Prince of Wales hotel? Looks like he's got his early Xmas present. Give it 3 years maximum and the SANFL will sell the Power license to a private consortium (Read: Pickard and/or people like him). Wonder what will become of the Magpies then. ;)
