If you quit you have to wait upto 8 weeks, if you have savings its longer.

But you touched on a good question! What if you dont have savings? Struggle town!

Also one other issue i have with centrelink (while im whinging) is how they determine how much people receive. I know a single mum with a 3yr old son who is hearing impaired. She receives close to $3k a month from centrelink as well as health care card and discount on other stuff like all mums etc do, but the kid is now drama, she doesnt pay for his hearing aids or speech therapy, she sits around most of the day doing not much, doesnt work etc, the kid is no trouble at all.

Thats a hell of a lot of money to be getting!

That doesn't sound right and sounds like one of those "yeah but I hear asylum seekers get more than I do" things and yes if you quit a job (as opposed to being sacked) you have to wait at least a couple of months before receiving any money. The income test thing has been in for awhile and rightly so, welfare should only be for those who need it.

I'm not taking a shot at you PG but all this "middle-class welfare" stuff was created by Howard. I suspect to demonise the poorest in society even further "you dole bludgers sit around laughing it up on your $450 a fortnight!" with little understanding on how to survive on such crap money. That's even before getting to the fact the nation is in full employment (5% unemployed), Work For The Dole (slave labour we have a miminum wage in this country) and starting next year Labor (yes, Labor) are bringing in welfare quarantining. If you are deemed as vulnerable or living in a poor area you can have half of that welfare benefit quarantined on to what is called a BasicsCard that can only be used at govt approved stores.

Totally agree.

I worked as a bank teller (in-between kids) for 17 years.

The final straw that broke the camels back and led me to quit was a 'mystery shopper'

At the time I was working in a very small branch - basically we knew everyone who walked in and out the door.

The bank had just started this new 'trend' of sending in Mystery Shoppers.

This particular day 2 girls walked in - not our normal country bankers either - waltzing in with bikini tops on and tight shorts, would have been aged in their high teens, low 20's and just start throwing all these questions at me about our 'products' - It was blatantly obvious that these girls were 'mystery shoppers' and therefore I showed them extra, extra attention. The manager was only metres away witnessing the whole thing. They left with their answer, brochures, etc, etc. All was fine.

That was until the 'mystery shopper' report came back - apparently I showed them no attention, was not interested in answering their questions and basically pushed them out the door

Well the announcement here was 3 minutes before the time of my post and that was on the BBC radio and they interrupted the show instead of waiting about 13 minute until the scheduled news bulletin so I'd think it had only just had it's press release.

I'm sure you'll be hearing ALL about it soon enough too.

Don't get me wrong...very happy for the couple but the media will just go so over-the-top the way they do with almost everything these days...they'll be analyising it, discussing it, every show will find an excuse to have a theme based on it...if there's a Dr Who Royal Wedding Special I SHALL end it all %-( ~x(

As a parent of a hearing impaired child there were a lot of sacrifices to be made to get our child to eventually be able speak, listen and comprehend at an age appropriate level. My wife had to give up work to ferry my daughter all over the place for early intervention therapies and endless appointments to be able to give our daughter (she is 9 now) the same opportunities in future life that other kids will have. $3k per month might have covered some of her wages and costs involved but it doesn't do anything for the emotional experiences that we went through and still go through. As I was working we didn't get $3k a month so we were suffered financially as well. I dont know whether the single mum you are referring to has ever worked, what level of hearing impiment the kid has or how the kid is going with his speech, etc but dont underestimate what toll it can take on someone.
So stop whinging PG and get a job! :)

Oh well, I know one of Diana's cousins who lives in Adelaide. Perhaps I can get an invitation and free accommodation with the family as compo for the inconvenience.. ;)
Hopefully it will be all over by May.
