So Shaun Dawson and Joseph Quigley are two of Birdwoods new recruits courtesy of Ryan McGahey and these guys know they are playing Country Div. Birdwood must be paying some big bucks.

Are Birdwood the new Torren$ Valley of Hills Country with the cheque book they seem to have?

That poses an interesting question though - should teams recruit up until their points are full or recruit just over their allocated points since every team usually has injury troubles which frees up some points? The trouble is when you have a full team, some top line players may need to rotate through the b grade.

Duke wrote:i have nothing to do with maccy but duke what is your issue with them and there coaches?
at the end of 2007 maccy lost alot of players most to tailem bend. mitchell was appointed coach in 2008 and they finished bottom.
in 2009 they appointed simon johnson who bought some new players and the club were probably unlucky to miss finals and lost games they could have won finishing 6th.
in 2010 they made the finals and went out in the first week which was to be expected as they hadnt beaten any of the teams above them. an improvement in the last 3 years if you ask me and on season 2009. noone thought johnson was going to take them to a flag.
although simon johnson clashes with alot of people you can not deny he didnt help lift the club from a slump. for whatever reason johnson is not the coach at maccy and they have now got the services of ben porter to help them go forward. if he makes a further impact and lifts them further up the ladder then he has done his job. and you could probably call them both impact coaches then!

Even though I've said plenty on this, he was a good choice of coach and did a good job.
Don't know the issues at other clubs he's coached, but prospective coaches weren't exactly lining up to coach Maccy at the end of 2008. One coach who was pursued pretty hard in August of that year decided to coach elsewhere and with the benefit of hindsight it was probably for the best that this person didn't end up getting the job.
Being on the committee at the time there didn't appear to be a great list of applicants but one that did apply has proved his worth elsewhere since but the reports about him from previous clubs and previous members of those clubs weren't exactly glowing.
Johnson helped bring some real quality players including Mick Daniele and Ronald Rankine as well as good players from TTG.
Given our circumstance at the time we'll more than take what he delivered.

A lot of people on here have a shot at him but I have no doubt there are 2 sides to each of the stories we hear, but it seems easy to gang up on a bloke when he or no one else on here knows who is saying it.

Ben Porter is a great appointment. Very passionate coach. Does get a little full on at times but that just because of his love of the game. I have also played under him and think Maccys have made a good choice.

Sounds like he's from the SJ mould. Sounds like an impact coach then!!!
