Who went to the Big Day out?

Postby BenchedEagle » Sat Feb 03, 2007 2:26 pm

Hey guys im still feeling the afterpains of sunburn a hangover and crused ribs.
What were some of the highlights?
Finally met Dogwatcher in the bag search line, then didnt see him at all for the rest of the day. Top bloke though.
For me it was my mates band Double Dragon, Trivium and Tool. Plus tons of girl on girl action in the lilypad!

Hers a couple of my fave pics of the day.

I would have gone and seen Violet Femmes, but the heat is usually to much for me, as it is today.

The highlights started the moment I left home on Thursday evening!!!!!

Had a big couple of days.

Thursday night was spent wandering Adelaide and got in at 4am. cracked first beer next morning at 7.30am.
Got a 17 year old into a strip club (should I be admitting this?) and had an 18 year old freak a 'hostess' out by telling her he was asexual (huh?) and then explained what it meant to her chances of getting him to buy a lap dance. Sadly he was serious.

Band highlights:

The Herd were awesome. Brilliant show - capped off by John Schumann's appearance. I Was Only 19 (A Walk in the light green) always brings a tear to my eye - whichever version I hear.

The Killers were brilliant. A great vibe when they played. I read a review of their performance which said they weren't that great on stage - but I think the vibe was so good it didn't matter. It was a shame my Mrs DW wasn't there - as they're one of the few bands we agree on.

Adelaide's Santa Fire Rosa (whatever order that goes in) were brilliant. Caught them by accident - but was so glad I did! Highlights were their Brit rock guitar style and yes (cringingly) their cover of JT's Sexxyback was good too.

And finally The Violent Femmes performance was just so beautiful. Great to see them again for the first time I was 18. Scarily I knew every word of every song in their set.

Other highlights - the brief moments I caught of You Am I, Tool and Muse. The Stinkfirst intro had me pulsing madly.

I spent loads of the day just catching up with people - some I expected, others I didn't. It started from the bag check (g'day Duncs) and continued right to the very end of the night (well actually - when I was wondering the streets in a hazed pub crawl at 2.30am Saturday morning). Which for me - who lives in the country - is as much of a thrill as seeing the bands.

And EE - damn you for not getting some girl/girl vision on your camera. Second version of it I've heard about from the day that the people were inconsiderate enough not to do that! Friends of mine saw some pretty serious action in a hotel room later that night.

I was too busy singing Joelene as I walked back into the city; bumping into Robert Stopforth (look in Elizabeth's 86 premiership pic) and offending a blind bloke (by telling him I didn't believe he was blind) and the daughter of Norwood's president (when I told her the Redlegs are rubbish).

Did you make it to the Hilton?

I did for about half an hour - what a weird scene that was.

Well - that a good enough wrap up for you all?

I can write more. A night out on the town's always an experience with me!

Diodnt get too the Hilton, got the shuttle into town went to enigma with my metal boyz, had a coupla pints there, then escorted a lovely lady to the Cranka where the pint of sparkling ale there ended my memorys of the rest of the night!!!!

Great day overall, but a few lowlights
*$4 for a bottle of water.
*Had to line up 5 times to get my first beer.
Gate, bag check, ID tag, token stand, bar. That is a disgrace!!
*Dickheads in the Tool mosh. I had to give left jab to one of them. U just dont surf to Tool. Not that sort of music.
But yes the stinkfist intro and the last song Aenima, were an absolute treat.
*Teeny punk wannabes there for My Chemical Romance only.

I missed a few bands i wanted to see, spent a lot of time, at bars and in mist tent.

We had a great BDO this year which surprised me. Mr MK, myself and five others went out for lunch first before being dropped off there. We cruised all day not wanting to do the frantic rushing from band thing we've been known to do and it was a good decision. Movements for the day:

1. Butterfly Effect
2. The Herd but we got there too late just as everyone was pouring out.
3. DJ Digital Primate but not for very long.
4. Scribe while we were in the drink token queue.
5. The Sleepy Jackson so we could start drinking beer at a not so crowded bar.
6. Trivium
7. Peaches and Herms for a nanosecond and under duress.
8. Funkoars
9. Kasabian
10. The Killers last 15 minutes or so (because of 9.).
11. The Drones but not for very long and just hung out in the Boiler Room for a while before,
12. Tool and then,
13. Violent Femmes but couldn't get close enough as it was packed and I've seen them a thousand times so was quite happy to give that a miss.

BOG for ours was Kasabian, I haven't seen them before and they were excellent. Well worth missing The Killers for.

We drank a lot of beer.

The Herd were the best, finished with I Was Only 19, which was awesome. The Streets were the other real good band in the boiler room. Trivium were surprisingly popular, played a wicked set and should have been on the main stage. Other than that Tool played awesome, although The Pot would have completed the day if they played it. Missed Kasabian which was annoying, Move To Strike were also worth seeing on the local stage.

Yes, The Pot would have been awesome. But at least they played Jambi. That was one of the best songs on the night. I had the biggest adrenaline rush when they started with stinkfist though! I could have walked through walls. AEnima was wikid to end the night.
I heard Peaches were impressive and im a bit spewin i missed Kasabian. But what are ya gonna do?

A good day, although the BDO's seem to blur a bit into one now a days. The Herd were the higlight, great to see they are getting the recognition they have deserved for a while. A few people really missed the point by waving Australian flags during their set. Thankfully not too many people felt the need to bring one on the day.

The Vines did a good set, as did You Am I, Violent Femmes and Peaches.

They did 'The Pot' in Melbourne but didn't do it @ the Myer Music Bowl on 31/1/07.
I saw The Killers,Jet,Muse and Tool but the concerts put on by Muse at Festival Hall
on Tuesday 30/1/07 and Tool the next day were magnificent.
If you missed out on Tool don't worry. Maynard told the crowd that they would be back in September.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Lily Allen did not play in Adelaide as she did in the eastern states? But in the Sunday Mail gossip column (ie the whole newspaper) the said she was spotted at the Hilton after party burning up the dance floor. WTF?
