Former South Africa star Herschelle Gibbs reveals group sex and drug taking by Proteas in Australia
By Ben Dorries
From The Daily Telegraph November 03, 2010 7:02AM Former South Africa star Herschelle Gibbs has rocked world cricket with lurid revelations of group sex and drug taking by Proteas players on the tour of Australia in 1997-1998.

The controversial batsman - who spent a stint in alcohol rehabilitation - says the South Africa players spent almost as much time having sex and smoking marijuana as playing cricket.

Gibbs makes the claims in his frank new book, To The Point, which is now the hottest talking point of international cricket.

It includes graphic descriptions of sexual encounters in which Gibbs and other players allegedly took part, including one with a young woman attending a school-leavers' dance and a hotel-room orgy involving three women.

"I got the ball rolling, but then I noticed that my mate was feeling a little left out," Gibbs writes.

"Now he's lying on the other bed, so, big-hearted chap that I am, I say, 'Well, you can't leave my mate all alone there'.

"And fortunately one of them was only too happy to transfer ship.

"There were always women, they came hunting in packs and if they liked what they saw, you were in for the ride of your life."

South Africa captain Graeme Smith, who is leading South Africa in a series against Pakistan, is furious at Gibbs's claims and said current players were "very disappointed" by the controversy.

Smith and his current teammates insist Gibbs made up most of the book to cash in on the publicity and make as much money as he could.

Gibbs said he expected criticism, but "hopefully people can respect the honesty".

"I've been very open and honest about the whole thing. I knew from the start that it would get a lot of criticism, so be it. I've enjoyed the experience," he said.

"The team has been criticised for being run by a group of senior players - Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, and more recently, AB de Villiers.

"This inner circle splits the team in two and makes any chance of developing true team spirit among the Proteas impossible."

Despite Gibbs's allegations of a team rupture, South Africa performed wonderfully in Australia in 2008 when they created history by winning their first Test series on Australia soil.

Gibbs could face disciplinary action as he remains contracted to South Africa cricket until next April.

Exactly, anyone who thinks there isnt a portion of international cricketers from each country doing this type thing is deluded.

Maybe the autobiography could have waited until a few current players mentioned in the book had retired though, that would be my only critism.

Wait for the Roy Boy book that details the boozy nights (and teammates involved), the punchups, and the things we are yet to hear about...!

Of course Gibbs had to write something raunchy. After all, not too much happened on the field.

Gibbsy is just trying to sell books.

Smith the skipper is a head strong person and just expresses confidence/commands respect from others. Example I read somewhere a few years ago that Smith spotted a girl (maybe now his wife) in a magazine in South Africa. He tracked down her manager to ask for her phone number to ask her out on a date

If this stuff happens is South African cricket then god help us if any similar stories get out about the Australian players antics. From what I have heard over the years then some former players have plenty to worry about.

Daryll Cullinan, the former South Africa batsman, has denied exposing team-mates for smoking marijuana during the 2001 tour of the Caribbean following statements made by Herschelle Gibbs in his new autobiography.

In a separate development, Cricket South Africa (CSA) said it would comment on the issues arising from Gibbs' book only if its legal counsel, which was examining the matter, deemed it necessary.

Cullinan rejected claims that he betrayed Gibbs, Paul Adams, Roger Telemachus, Andre Nel, Justin Kemp and physiotherapist Craig Smith after it emerged they had smoked marijuana to celebrate the series win against West Indies in Antigua.

Cullinan wrote in his sport24 column that Graham Ford, the coach, had been informed by his wife who had smelt the drug while staying in an adjacent room and that he only found out from the coach and team manager, Goolam Raja. Cullinan felt the players should be sent home, but the captain Shaun Pollock didn't agree.
