Is it Fair

Postby The Cadet » Sun Oct 31, 2010 9:08 am

Is it fair that Australia's 20/20, ODI players dont get the chance to play much Sheffield Shield Cricket. Especially feel for Cam White, seems to get leap froged in the Test pecking order because he dosn't play a gret deal of Shiled cricket. Has played one ODI in the last 20 days, when guys like Kawaja, and Fergusson yesterday get the oppurtunity to make first class 100's and press thier claim for the 1st Test.

No it is not fair... :(

Having said that, if you asked Cam White if he'd rather play for VIC in the Shield, or AUS in an ODI, he'd pick playing for AUS, I'm sure...

There's just too much cricket to have Shield and Ryobi matches at different dates to Test and ODI...

At best the regular International players might squeeze in two or three ODD games, and maybe a solitary SS game...

When was the last time Ponting played SS cricket?

Yeah thats ok for Ponting because he's a Test player. How doe's White press his claim to play Test cricket. He gets punished for being Australia's best 20/20 and ODI player.

I know... What I mean is Ponting has been out of form (before the India tour), and would have benefited from SS cricket- don't see him playing it...

White is a tough one... I wouldn't mind seeing him in the side- even at the expense of Hauritz, because he's only being played because he is a spinner, not because he's in the best XI in the country...

White would certainly be of more benefit to the AUS Test XI, but there's no way for him to get there, unless he makes himself unavailable for ODI games- which won't happen...

What's VIC's SS schedule like DURING the Ashes series?

If he does well, hopefully he can nab someone's spot...

I wouldn't mind Ferg, Usman and Cam come into the team...

it is fair because he is fulfilling every kids dream of playing for his country. One day form can contribute towards test match form, especially confidence.

+1. He's a gun and I love watching him play, but let's be serious about this. Cameron White is not a test cricketer.

You can't say 'put him in the team now' and expect him be a walk up start to the side. Just cause he make a few runs and gets a few people excited, doesn't mean he should be picked in our test team. It just doesn't work like that.

IMO his technique isn't good enough for test cricket, he's too much of a hitter and he just isn't patience enough to play as a test batsman.

He bowling really is, just awful. He can't land the ball consistanly enough and when he does it hardly turns at all. I wish it was so much better than it is, even so he could be used more as a bowler in ODI cricket, but it's not.

He doesn't even bowl himself as state level, even though he could.

It is definitely a tough one. I guess if he believes he is a good enough player in the longer form of the game he could stand down from ODIs & T20's to focus on the SS .....(*tongue in cheek)!

Just looked at his 1st class stats and they aren't too bad although not world beating. Averages 42.27 in 108 games, 15 tons. I reckon his stints at Somerset would've probably topped them up a bit though. I watched him carve up some mediocre County attacks on Sky Sports when I lived over there. I guess at 27 he may still have some improvement in him.

A bit harsh having a crack at his technique. Look at North. Defends around his pad with the face of the bat almost closed to square leg. Or Hussey who can't hit the ball off the square any more. Hmmmmm.

White's been one of the big improvers in Australian cricket over the past few years. He seems to bat with a level head when he's needed to in the ODI arena and belts it once he has his eye in. I think we could do worse than pick him for a test spot.

All valid points! I do think people put too much emphasis on statistics and averages (myself included) when looking at/analysing players. There are definitely worse cricketers than White playing test cricket around the globe. Once these ODI's are out of the way and the test matches start, he will have more opportunities at Shield level to push for a spot.

I don't know a lot about Cameron, but I like it... Who would your Test spinner be (if you had one)?

Obviously SIDDLE, MJ, HILF, BOLLY are fighting for the quick spots, and I think they are all past playing in 'A' sides now...

And we are still winning Shield matches in under two days. How much more proof do you need?
