the shape of adelaide oval

Postby bayman » Wed Oct 27, 2010 10:27 pm

i went to the cricket tonight & the actual shape/dimensions of the oval will be different to the oval we've all grown up with, basically the deep pockets will no longer be at the southern end & i'd presume they'd 'mirror' it at the northern end as well, i also think it will be a bit more narrow (wing to wing) than it once was, the surface as usual was brilliant
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Heard Greg Blewett talking about the shape of the ground during the cricket on fox this arvo, he said he wondered if it might be a bit small for AFL, would still be bigger than SCG though i would have thought.
Trust the process.

I'm sure I read somewhere they plan (or have already) to make it the exact same dimensions as Etihad Stadium.

If it was any narrower than it was before you'd struggle to fit a cricket pitch in it! As I understood it they were going to widen the wings and make I more like an oval?

The plans certainly included widening the oval. The previous shape was technically outside the ICC minimum dimensions for an international ground. I think it is only a matter of metres though.

Yet they rope of all the other ovals to make them similar sizes and take some variety out of the batting as well as batsman-bowler contest.

And here's what is says:

The “impossible kick” for goal from the pockets has now been removed and ovalisation of the playing field completed.
The newly curved western perimeter in the north-west corner is now 12 to15 metres closer to the action. Ovalisation
is necessary to be able to accommodate a variety of sports and will create a playing surface that is consistent with
the SCG and Telstra Dome. The process was carefully overseen by Les Burdett who reports the Santa Anna couch has
suffered little from the experience.

In the spirit of the Southern Expressway, I would've thought half a ground with both teams using the same set of goals would be the way to go.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

This would give the Power a massive home ground advantage given their willingness to kick the pigskin away from their goals over the last couple of years.
