Going to be looking myself soon...it's like a new puppy at the moment and hasn't been outdoors til it's had all it's jabs

Not much help for you but with big handbags being the 'in' thing right now I'm thinking of those with a neoprene slipcover so I'll have one less bag to drag around with me and it'd be less conspicuous when out and about.

Quichey if you're going to be stuffing the netbook and associated bits and bobs into backpacks etc then I just found this which might be worth a look if you can get them over there...

Seems pretty hardy, but might be a bit bulky. I only travel with a 35L backpack, so don't have a lot of room to spare.

Have browsed through Amazon, they've got quite a range. I'm going to have to find a balance, something that offers a bit of protection but doesn't weigh much or is too big.

You can get cheap, wetsuit type material ones, obviously they dont provide as much protection as a hard case, but fit snugly with minimal bulk. You can then use the case to hold a cold long neck when using the netbook! :)

Probably not worth starting a new topic for this so I'll tag it on to this one.

Recovery Discs

Quichey or anyone else...how did you create recovery discs for your netbook???

I've asked everyone I can think of here to see if anyone has an external disc drive thing I could borrow to create them but I'm the first of the gang to get a netbook so that's a 'no' and I don't want to have to buy one just to create a couple of discs.

Also tried with the 'crossover' cable to my pc but the recovery disc creation wizard doesn't seem to see the pc's disc drive.

So what are my options???...I've looked in the instruction 'leaflet' that came with and checked the netbook 'help' pages but they're all written for stuff with built-in optical drives so totally useless.

All the laptops I've ever owned came with ready made Recovery Discs in the box, as did a friends eeePC.
So, I'm a bit puzzled that yours seems to require you to make your own..
The eeePC did require you to be able to plug in an external optical drive, and assumed you would have one!

It's not a laptop...it's a netbook. Doesn't come with any discs at all probably because they don't have disc drives...but then again my pc didn't come with any discs either (wasn't meant to according to the instruction leaflets) but that had the default system stuff built in on another drive (I think) so when I got a virus last year I set the reboot thingy running it automatically reset everything back to year 0.

To clarify...this is what I'm trying to do...and I'm assuming that I DO need to do this...

Get hold of an external optical (ie DVD or CD) drive.
I love 'Food and Stuff'. It's where I buy all of my food. And most of my stuff.

It sounds like the companies are economising in stages and gradually offloading responsibility to the purchaser.
As I said, a friend's eeePC mini-netbook - 2 years old - came with ready made disks, but you still need to buy or borrow an external optical drive to use them.
I guess saying you have to make your own is the next logical cost cutting step.

Some big commercial PC Desktop makers used to put their recovery files on a hidden partition on a single HDD, but that was no use when the HDD died!
Of course they didn't mind selling you an overpriced "prepared" replacement HDD or a new machine ASAP.

Car manufacturers here wish they could pull off something similar - our Automobile Chamber of Commerce keeps suggesting we adopt the Japanese system.
That is, no requirement to provide parts for vehicles over 5 years old and stringent safety checks on all such "ancient" vehicles.
[They hate the fact that cars live so long in Oz.]

OK I was asking if there were other options as I was trying to avoid having to buy one just for that cos I don't see me needing it for much else...

So are you saying that the link Kahuna posted about using one of those flash stick things isn't the same as I'm trying to do or wouldn't work???

P.S. Thanks for the link Kahuna

The USB stick may work to save the files to, but being able to do the recovery that way depends on whether the net book can be set to boot from the USB stick in its BIOS as the link shows.
Some may not offer that boot option, so you need to have a look at that first.

Ah ha...so is it more a case of Packard Bell either trying to scare average punters like me into buying more hardware or them being overcautious out of a fear of getting sued if they don't recommend making recovery discs???

So not something I need to sweat over too much then? I mean it's only got windows7 Starter Edition so if I did lose everything somehow I'd probably use that as an excuse to install a Windows7 full version and it's not like I'm using to store my lifes work.

The only time I had to use a set of rescue disks was with a laptop that lost a device driver somehow.
It only had the device drivers incorporated into the Rescue set instead of on separate disks, and it didn't ID the devices in the manual, so downloading them separately was a bit tricky.
[HiGrade - a UK brand.]

These days there is free software which will ID them for you - CPUZ, Sisoft Sandra, et al.

My friend's eeePC belonged to an adult son who is now in Europe.
Without his login [which he has forgotten after 2 years away] you need the Rescue set to restore the original set up and allow creating a new user account.
