Batting Keepers

Postby mal » Sun Oct 24, 2010 11:55 am

There were many who thought that Adam gilCHRIST was irreplaceable when he retired
The void to replace the Bradman of Keepers was almost unachievable according to most
Australia has had this unbelievable run of keepers who bat exceedingly well over several decades
MARSH
HEALY
gilCHRIST
HADDIN

HADDIN is doing a brilliant job to almost be gilCHRIST standard these days....BUT
The pressure is on as AU is blessed with several keepers who are in my opinion are about International standard, Ive listed them in Alphabetical order

HADDIN
The sweetest of all batting keepers, his timing of the ball batsmanlike, his glovework can let him down
HARTLEY
Does a job a real fighter with the bat and a damn fine keeper
PAINE
Very correct batsman and can bat anywhere, glove work is ok
MANOU
Batting has slipped in recent times, exceptionally good gloveman, prob the best of all
RONCHI
On his day an amazing batsman, but his days are not often enough, his keeping is adequate
SMITH
Handy hitting batter, keeps well, good domestic player
WADE
The jewell of the file, can bat like a batsman, can bash like hell, and keeps very well

QUESTION
Who is or would be the best batsman ?
Mine in order are with a rating out of 10 at Test Standard [using gilCHRIST as a 9.9 rating]
9.0 HADDIN
7-5 WADE
7-5 PAINE
6-0 HARTLEY
6-0 RONCHI
4-5 MANOU
3-0 SMITH

i think you will find nevill will keep for nsw ahead of smith when haddin goes back to teh aussie team

but teh interesting thing is that you could make an arguement for all of the states top-line keeper to play some form of international cricket

Matthew Wade, 22 years:

35 first class matches: 1611 runs @ 40.27/135 catches, 4 stumpings
22 one day matches: 638 runs @ 37.52/23 catches, 2 stumpings

Tim Paine, nearly 26 years:

42 first class matches: 2252 runs @ 31.27/119 catches, 4 stumpings
72 one day matches: 2280 runs @ 35.07/87 catches, 9 stumpings

Brad Haddin, turned 33 yesterday:

123 first class matches: 7263 runs @ 40.80/389 catches, 27 stumpings
168 one day matches: 4927 runs @ 33.74/231 catches, 44 stumpings

Realistically, Haddin could play another three full seasons, which sees Wade at 25, Paine 29.

If Wade continues his leaps and bounds improvement, I doubt we will see too much international cricket from "T Pain."

If Gilly has a rating of 9.9-

8.0 HADDIN
7.5 WADE- (He will only get better)
7.5 PAINE
6.0 HARTLEY
5.5 RONCHI
3.5 MANOU
2.0 SMITH

When Haddin retires Paine will then take the gloves then when he goes Wade will come in. IMO Matthew Wade will continue to get better and will have a long and successful career in the Baggy Green.

Ronchi missed the boat and Hartley was blanketed by Haddin so he never got a real chance to progress up the ranks. Manou is the best keeper out of the lot but is way to inconsistant with the bat and these days, your keeper needs to be able to bat and contribute consistantly with the bat in hand. Smith is just a back up to Haddin for NSW, nothing more and will never progress past state cricket.

Realistically though- if there was a Test match side selected tomorrow, the "pecking order" would be:

HADDIN
PAINE
HARTLEY
MANOU
WADE

That would be Daniel Smith, Haddin's understudy in NSW's squad.

After getting a PM from Mal, and then using Cricinfo, Smith gets a 2.

As far as Manou is concerned, i reckon he'd be at the bottom of the pecking order of wicket keepers now. Did himself no favours by trying to bat himself at number 6 in 4 day games or as an opener or first drop in shorter versions of the game.

Ronchi should be down there with Smith. Just a dirty slogger and wicket-keeping is poor at best.

But as far as the "batsman" side of it goes, his slogging (I agree that is all it is) comes off often enough.

Haddin great batsmen terrible glove work. I think haddins test average is better than norths. I think in odi haddin can open bat and still play paine. Haddin better value as batsmen than clarke, huss or marsh

Since Wade's first class career stats are as good as Haddin's get him in now.
Considering Wade will get better with age and Haddin has missed quite a few games with injury throughout his career.
No better time to bring Wade in with some experience still in the Australian side.
Would not like to be the next best keeper after Wade because the only time you will get a game is when he is rested.
For every one I miss I am closer to a hole in one.

That got me thinking about a stat...

How many Tests did Gilly miss during his career?
