SHRINKING MOVIES WHEN DOWLOADING ??

Wondering if anyone has heard of a program that can shrink the size of a movie when downloading.
I want to burn all my DVD's onto an external HD to stop my 3yr old boy from using the DVD's as frisbees and scratching the shit out of them
Most of my dvd's are copies from O/S, and seem to be around the 4-6GB. I have about 200 of them, and at that size takes about 1hr to do each movie...

So i was wondering if there is a program i can buy/downlaod that can shrink them to about 700-800 MB to save time ?

I am not much of a tech head, so please explain s-l-o-w-l-y and dont use big words.......

You can convert them to AVI.

But I don't really have the time to explain how. Best do some googling.
