I had a horrible experience today.

16 year old cricket teammate is being scolded by his mother over not doing his schoolwork acceptably.

I glance over, as I always enjoy people who aren't me getting told off, and the lad is giving his mother the bird!

Not just a sly quick one, he's made sure she's looking, and given her a good, long, rude finger.

The horrible part is that I am young, but these words fell out of my mouth:

"BACK IN MY DAY you would have been knocked on your arse for that."

Got me thinking. Different posters, different age groups, upbringings, ethnic or religious quirks... What happens in the 2010's that would have been treated very differently "back in your day..."

Geeze back in my day if I got in trouble at school I never wanted it getting home. I dunno what was worse explaining a detention or the hiding I got from the old man.

Being realistic about it I don't think that much is very different.

There were certainly kids who behaved like that when I was a kid back in the 1960's although maybe not as many as you see today. We also had kids hanging about in gangs in towns and cities but I'd say the underage drinking is probably worse. I do think there is a lack of discipline...we didn't so much 'respect' our elders as feared the pain they were allowed to inflict. I'm not talking about getting beaten to within an inch etc but teachers, the local copper and pretty much anyone could give a kid a clip round the ear for bad behaviour and if you went home crying about it to your parents they'd probably give you another for good measure.

I suppose another thing would be buying stuff on credit. In our house it was seen as the last resort of very poor people something to be ashamed of back then...you saved up for what you wanted and you paid in full.

My current little gripe that sets me in grumpy old woman mode is the way people waste so much food. Learn to love your freezer and learn how to use leftovers...one of the greatest comfort foods ever is a shepherd's pie made properly with minced leftover roast lamb.

I think this sums it up. Kids aren't necessarily more rude, there's just more kids and it's more noticeable, more bad kids means easily influenced kids are going to feed off each other.

There's still decent, polite kids around.

Here's something I don't think would be allowed nowadays. When I was eight, I went along with Dad to work a few times after the footy on a Saturday evening. Being an electrican, this meant that it would be a Coles supermarket for example. I used to wander around the store looking at products, see the floor getting cut up with a diamond cutter, watch him work, or even help out a little. I also remember playing the pinball machine in the staff room upstairs!

As a kid, if I swore Dad would whack me one. (It was a bit unfair though because I learnt all my swear words from him. Then came the day when in school I drew a picture of him with The Eyebrows (a 'V' shape), accompanied by a speech bubble and the words 'you bloody little arsehole'. He made a real effort to tone his language down after that.)

The exception was at the footy - when Dad and I went to see the Eagles play I'd swear at the umpires and Dad would say 'Keep it down!' in a shocked voice but ten minutes later he'd be going off his trolley as well. Afterwards he'd look a bit sheepish and ask me not to tell Mum.

As for giving either of my parents the bird - I admit I did do it on a few occasions as a teenager, but always after I got knocked on my arse, not before, so as far as I'm concerned it was fair enough.

But THIS is what really gives me the pip - Back in MY day, KIDS DIDN'T HAVE MOBILE PHONES. I didn't get my phone until I was fifteen - I bought it myself with money I'd saved up, but my parents were still furious. Even fifteen was pretty young, I was the only kid in my class with a phone except for the girl whose parents always bought her whatever she wanted. Now Angus is asking for one. (He's not getting one.)

Fresh Fish for sale, Never a bad fish in them days.

When it was hot, Cokes' would leave a couple of free bottles on the front door step.

From what elderly shooters have told me over the years...back in their day (when they were my age), you or someone else, could walk down the street or catch public transport carrying a gun (presumably in a gun bag but they didn't mention that) and nobody back then would bat an eyelid...
