PC Games You Should Get!

Postby Wedgie » Mon Oct 11, 2010 9:01 pm

After some recommendations, recently upgraded my video card to a pretty schmick 5870 unit and already have 8gb of ram, large HDD but only play World of Warcraft on it so looking for something spectacular.
Im a PC gaming person, cant stand consoles and can't even understand why people use consoles.
Already have Starcraft 2 and Bioshock 2 as recent games Ive purchased. (love them both)
Probably after a FPS or similar.

I like this site if I'm looking for something new to play so you might find some ideas on here...

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm

Lists what's up and running, what's in Beta and what's in development

Cheers JAS, not after a MMORPG though. Already play the best one and might give Star Wars a go when it comes online.
I'm after something like a modern day Unreal Tournament.

Bought Civ 5 a couple of weeks back and it's a ripper.

If you like a good strategy game, then this one is it. Past versions of the game favoured military domination or science to win the game, but this version evens up the other 'victory' options so they are much more viable to pursue.

*edit*

Just saw that you're after something spectacular though, so this probably isn't it.

Not brand new but for value you can't go past The Orange Box from Valve. All of the recent Half Life games & episode packs, a nifty puzzler in Portal and of course Team Fortress 2 which usually gets cranking at Chez Zipzap from approx 10pm nightly - a cracker :)

Yeah I'm looking for Team Fortress (The Sleeping Giant recommended it) but couldn't find it yesterday. Might suss out Half Life and maybe Halo too since they're all so cheap now.

Team Fortress comes 'free' with Half Life / Orange Box but if you can't find a retail copy sign up to Steam and download it. The thing I love about it is even though it's a couple of years old now, the developers support it vigorously with upgrades all the time to keep it interesting and fresh. I don't like their recent change in which you can buy weapons upgrades with cash though - should have to earn things like that IMO

Not sure if this would be of interest to anyone but I've just had an email from a 'freebies' site I use...

Free PC Game - Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun

these guys are currently giving the full version of Tiberian Sun away for free. Get in while you can!

Here's the link to the game...couldn't see anything to say it's UK only (apologies if I've missed it)...

Bought 2 Half Life/Team Fortress Orange Box at lunch time. Looking forward to giving them a go tonight.
Glad I looked in the cases before I went home as on was empty. Soon fixed with a quick trip back to EB ;)

PS Buy 2 of most things so me and my son can play against each other. :D

Can you imagine how crap a game like that would be on a console? Viva la PC!

Half Life didn't impress me although it did make me realise how far graphics have come in a short amount of time.
Team Fortress 2 however is going to keep me and my son occupied for hours despite it not heating up my graphics card.
Unreal Tournament meets Worms!

Instead of forking out $90-$100 on games like the new Medal Of Honor Im tempted to give a few more old school games a go though so keep the recommendations coming.
For pure "feel" but creepiness Bioshock 2 has done it for me, that's scary but good because it is so scary! lol

Might try Borderlands and maybe some of the later Halos.

With World of Warcraft's patch not hitting for a couple of months and me now having my machine really souped up I might chop and change and try out a few games in this time.

Did you play Half Life the whole way through? The ant lions? The striders? The buggy? The gravity gun? You still don't like it?? Man you're hard to please ;)

For old-school, the original Deus Ex was a great game in its day - though the graphics look well creaky now.
Far Cry / Crysis a good FPS series too.
AVP2 was nice and creepy - best of the Alien series I thought.

Nah, didn't and can see where you're coming from as I've since played further and have really enjoyed it, just starts off a little slow.
My son saw me playing it and he installed it on his computer and loves it too, he's a crazy driver in those hover crafts!
Thanks for the advice mate! :D

Just bought 3 for price of 2 games at JB and as the games are only $18 anyway it was a bargain - Batman: Arkham Asylum, Resident Evil 5 and Thief: Deadly Shadows. Now all I need is to hatch a cunning plan to send wife and kids away for a couple of weeks. ;)
