Being a Westies supporter, I am truely suprised that we have 5 on that list.......I thought Silverstor would be the only one to make it. Our Best and Fairest, Daniel Caire, didnt make it before the other 4. I wouldnt have thought Fergusson played enough games to make the list.

Three off-season recruits for the Eagles in the SANFL top 50 (Lewis 12, Grieger 20, Parry 31).

Parry you knew would have been good due to previous SANFL form, but Lewis and Grieger were a huge bonus having previously been in the SANFL system, but having a year playing in country leagues. Welsh a disappointment, but overall very good recruiting by the Eagles.

Also great to see Grocke recognised in the top 10. Our most important player (together with McKenzie - who rightly slipped down the pecking order due to a quietish season).

How would this top 50 go as a squad in the AFL?

If it's based on 2010 form then I don't understand how Ferguson gets in, having only played 9 games, nor Ezard, who had a pretty ordinary year.

Good point!

I think another interesting point is that the Eagles had 8 on the list which is a fair representation given the number of AFL ins and outs there each week.

Pretty happy with that, Callinan deserves number 1 and Lower is a definate gun.

Personally i would have had Andrew Hayes top 10 knocking out one of either Sheedy (gun career imho at end of career not top 10 definate top 20) or Pupopolo (very handy but dont rate his disposal especially under any kind of pressure)

Love seeing Jimmy Allan at 7, i thinks thats about right, not including Giles i would much rather the other blokes in my side ahead of him.

I think the top 5 is spot on and that would have the top 5 players i would have had in there.

I think that the number of doggies players in the line-up was also affected by injuries which would have affected both their form and ability to be considered.

no, not really. We have a side that doesn't consist of a lot of stand-out type of players, that's all. Stand-out players this year, Callinan, Lawry, Thomas (as usual), Hayes & maybe Spurr, you can't, without being biased, say that anyone else had a GREAT season.

Good to see ALL clubs represented with a player in the top 50...

Also, some may make comment on the Doggies having less than 3 other sides, but the lads who wrote the article had this to say about that:

The Localfootysa writers wrote:And yes we realise there are more Norwood, Glenelg and Eagles players than Central District, but that just goes to show the overall evenness of the Bulldogs line-up.

Yep that's why North only had 3 players listed as well

He wasn't our leading Magarey vote getter this year, wasn't in the SANFL team of the year, or even in the top 5 in our best and fairest, yet Adam Grocke in the top 10 as our highest ranked player is certainly justifiable. I have always said, you cannot say he didn't put in, even when he has an off day or gets poor delivery from the midfield. When everything clicks, he is arguably the most influential player on the ground.

Spot on with this assessment.

The attitude he shows in every game is fantastic. I hate seeing forwards who spit the dummy and don't chase and defend when necessary. Grocke give it his all and busts his guts out doing the team thing. This year he became more consistent with his best form and the results have shown.

Congrats to Ben Grieger as well. Could well be the state full back next year if he backs up his form this year next season

Sounds like Darren Smith for Port in the 80's. Not very highly rated by the general football community, but plays a big role in victories when he plays well.

These types of lists and rankings always subjective and will evoke emotive responses no matter what. I would love to know the criteria overall and who voted the actual order. Bemused that Alleway could rank at 46???

Couldn't agree more. Allan and Alleway absolutely carried North to their 9 wins this year. Without them North would have finished bottom. To only rate Alleway at 46 shows an absoute lack of knowledge about football, but given the Advertiser journalists efforts this year I am not surprised at anything that comes from that mob.

Agree with these comments.
Would have thought Alleway (46) and Greiger (20) would be the other way around, same with Lewis (12) and Gallagher (23)
