umpiring in the finals

Postby bayman » Mon Sep 20, 2010 12:24 pm

i think it has been first class with the umpires letting it go....i just wish they'd umpire like that for the entire season....i realise that only the better umpires are required for the finals & this has something to do with it....well done to the umpires in this finals series (even curtis 'the boy' was good  )
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Noticed the free kick tally was 12 to 15 in the Dogs v Norwood game. Spot on if you ask me as I've always said that if there is more than 30 free kicks paid in a match then the game has been over umpired. Keep it up umps!

what about if 40 tackles are laid that are over the shoulder.

you cant put a figure on how many or how little frees should be paid in a game.

umpiring was good yesterday

Of course it comes down to what's going on in the game. Most matches aren't that badly played that you see 30 high tackles, 20 push in the backs and 20 holding the ball decisions that should be paid.
I was saying 30 as a general rule from th 25 years of watching as many games of footy that i can every weekend. Sometimes it might be slightly over and sometimes it might be slighly under.
Yesterdays game was well umpired because they didn't pay the soft over the shoulder frees and therefore only 27 frees were paid.

Overall has been reasonable, though the 2nd semi was probably the worst so far.
There was a comical part in the last 1/4 where one umpire thought it was a good idea to start paying some dodgy 25's to Norwood in their defence, but the umpire at the other end sure as hell wasn't going to give Norwood a free in their forward lines, eg Rowe in a marking contest, Phillips being held from behind in a "shepherd". It was like these umpires were playing back-and-forths between themselves.

The worst one was the 25m paid to Norwood AFTER the umpire called play on. Umpires umpiring in finals should not be making those errors simple as that.

What about deliberate out of bounds, Sibenaler's was the most blatant handball over the line I think I've ever seen.....

I've seen as bad as that v Glenelg at Elizabeth. Both were deliberate. They should either enforce it or drop it.

I think the umpiring has been pretty good thus far. Despite us getting a couple soft ones, and Centrals getting a couple soft ones, I agree with the number of deliberate out of bounds yesterday. They should have got on to that quicker, however to Centrals defense, it worked well for them, the umpires weren't paying it, so why not keep doing it and wasting time.

This included two real softies. One to McKenzie to give Centrals its first goal then another similar rucking infringement at the other end against Sutherland.
Evened up in the end but sheesh, real soft stuff.
Otherwise, I agree, the umps paid the frees that were there and weren't sucked in by acting.

So you agree that they should pay whatever frees are there, which makes your '30 frees' rule of thumb kind of pointless doesn't it? Either that or you're saying they should stop paying frees after they reach 30.

Didn't see the umpire call play-on, but is poor form if that was the case, but certainly saw the Legs player play on. As an opposition supporter, agree it makes you mad, esp when a player has to only blink sideways and they call play-on.

I was pretty peeved at the time about that one, but you could see Brady clearly pulling Buckets guernsey, so that's there

I didn't see it so I can't comment but there were 68 free kicks in the U18s Second Semi between Glenelg and West (26 to Glenelg and 42 to West)

I thought the Sutherland one should have gone the other way - he was blocked from tapping the ball from a non-ruckman.

As far as the out of bounds issue. It doesn't waste any time because the clock stops. What it does do is create a stoppage which favours the team that is winning the rucks and allows the defence time to reset.
We used to be good :-(

SANFL umpires are extremely lenient when it comes to deliberate out of bounds though - normally only 1-2 are paid in an entire season!

That was barely a little tug, but McKenzie was grabbed by the jumped several times more at boundary throw ins. Mind you, the Doggy ruckmen certainly had more strength than their Norwood counterparts.

So they aren't umpiring to the rules they are given then, he literally turned and put it straight over. It was a no brainer and I think was within 50 so would have been a shot on goal, not merely creating a stoppage as suggested above

Watching it live at AAMI, it looked as though he almost tried to play it to himself at the same time.
Yeah, it was badly disguised but the fact it just bobbled over the line kind of put enough doubt in my mind.
I think they were consistent with it all day.

Agree bayman. For all the frustrating umpiring you get during the year for some reason they let it go in the finals and it is a thousand times better.

The best thing about the umpiring so far:
1) NOT paying a high tackle to a player that ducks.
2) NOT paying push in the back against the tackler when the player takes a dive forward.
3) NOT paying holding the ball against the player who is willing to go in and get it and giving them a reasonable chance to get rid of it.

Well done to the umpires so far.
