SANFL Teams Of The Year - 2010

Postby CK » Thu Sep 16, 2010 6:43 pm

Sportsbeat and Independent Weekly will be released tomorrow, but as an early preview, my selection of the 2010 Team Of The Year. Other outlets will be releasing theirs shortly, so can be added along the way, and looking forward to seeing those of posters on here.

The criteria was no AFL listed players; the side was named as if it was playing tomorrow (so players were not merely named in a spot they have never played in), and there was no set quota of players from any one team, nor a requirement that every team had to have a representative. Having said that, the only team not represented was Port, with Mark Dolling unlucky in that respect. This team was selected last Sunday night, so no Magarey Medal performances, or Best and Fairest results came into consideration.

Many players were easy selections. It was impossible to go past Tigers Todd Grima and Ruory Kirkby and Bulldog Ian Callinan in attack, Sturt’s Jonathan Giles in ruck, and North’s James Allan in the centre, due to the clear standout seasons all players had in their roles. Others were a little tougher. Centre half forward could have easily gone to Norwood’s Sam Rowe, but the ultimate choice of Eagle Adam Grocke was an acknowledgement of the massive impact he has on the team when present, as well as his high possession rate for a key position player. South’s Nick Liddle played much of the season on the ball, but with Sturt’s Jade Sheedy and Glenelg’s Ty Allen in sound form there, Liddle was shifted to half forward, a role he has filled when resting this year.

The defensive six were easier to select, with all players standing out in their positions this season. Eagle Scott Lewis started with a blaze and while tapering off a little, he was too dominant to ignore. The need to have a resting ruckman to relieve Giles led to Glenelg’s Trevor Cranston winning a berth on the bench, along with Eagle Luke Jarrad and West’s Nat Caruso, who had some very impressive games in a variety of roles.

F: Ruory Kirkby, Todd Grima, Simon Phillips
HF: Ian Callinan, Adam Grocke, Nick Liddle
C: Nick Lower, James Allan, Kane Tenace
HB: Scott Lewis, Andrew Hayes, Paul Thomas
B: Luke Panozzo, Brett Zorzi ,Kieran McGuinness
1st ruck: Jonathan Giles, Jade Sheedy, Ty Allen
Inter: Trevor Cranston, Luke Jarrad, Nat Caruso

Surely Scott McGlone from Sturt has been better than Panozzo. Panozzo never actually defends his man and has conceded a number of goals this year. Statistical analysis anyone??

Otherwise apretty fair job I think by the selectors, well done.

I am amazed that Alleway is not in the side. He and Allan absolutely carried North this year. Without those two North would have been bottom. Alleway's possesion rate is much, much higher than Grocke or Rowe.

Ferguson is hands down the best key defender in the SANFL. He should be at CHB as one of the first picked. Also surprised to see Zorzi named at Full Back when has played majority if not all of the season in the midfield.

Hard to fit them all in but I would have thought Puopolo, Gum, Alleway, Boyd and Gallagher were a good chance of being included.

Will stop taking cheap shots and pick my side shortly.

Zorzi has played full back every other season since 2005, this is the first season he has been shifted back into his original Northern Bullants position of centre, therefore felt that naming him there was a reasonable one.

Jonathon giles spent every other year since 2005 playing for Centrals, but that won't be enough of a reason for them to pick him this week. I think a team of the year should be about the year - if not it becomes a "State Team" which is a different concept.

I tend to agree about Zorzi

surely the fullback position should be a player who has played their regularly this year, given the team is supposed to be one that could play tomorrow
Matty Wade is a star and deserves more respect from the forum family!

Surely Silvester or Mills should be at full back.

Not sure N Caruso deserves a spot, even on the bench. F Caruso maybe.

Ferguson didn't play enough games so he doesn't deserve a spot unfortunately SANFLnut.

Heath Lawry the obvious non-selection for mine, in career best form this year at FB for the Dogs also don't think Nat Caruso would be in my team over Lee Spurr or Paul Puopolo. Changed up some of the on-ball and defensive positioning as well for my side. Grocke too inconsistant for mine, Sam Rowe one of the best forwards in the comp and a better kick on goal.

My team would look like this:

FF: Ruory Kirkby, Todd Grima, Simon Phillips
HF: Ian Callinan, Sam Rowe, Nick Liddle
CL: Nick Lower, James Allan, Scott Lewis
HB: Paul Thomas, Kieran McGuinness, Lee Spurr
FB: Andrew Hayes, Heath Lawry, Paul Puopolo

1R: Jon Giles, Brett Zorzi, Ty Allen

INT: Trevor Cranston, Jade Sheedy, Kane Tenace

Ben Grieger @ full back, Zorzi in another position - eg. midfield, interchange. In fact, if you use the SANFL team of the years' blueprint, you'd have 4 on the bench (same as the State side does). About the only couple of things I disagree on, CK. :)

What would you class as a bag? The scoring this year has been pitiful, and it reflects this looking at the goals per game for the top goalkickers.

Edit:
Consider this years individual hauls to 2007:

2010:
8 goals - 1 - Chambers
7 goals - 3 - two to Salter, one to Grima
6 goals - 8 - two to Grima, two to Chambers, two to Kirkby, one to Rowe, one to Grocke
5 goals - 15
4 goals - 39

2007:
14 goals - 1
9 goals - 2
8 goals - 4
7 goals - 12
6 goals - 18
5 goals - 24
4 goals - 68

I think I do. Not so much with the Advertiser Team of the Year, but certainly the AFL AA team, you continue to hear the comment from judges that a certain player's inclusion wasn't based so much on the current season, but the fact he'd come close in the previous two, To me this is total BS, it should be judged simply on the current season and nothing else.

As a Norwood supporter I could not entertain the selection of Zorzi at Full Back for two reasons. One, he hasn't played there, and Two, he has played well enough to be included in a midfield role anyway.

State team selection is really just based on early season form.
