Sorry about this, accidentally deleted this topic but I've managed to dig up the posts using my back button:

Ive noticed in recent times a lot of security guards outside work places

Only kidding BUT

Now seriously, people having breaks and smoking is bad news.
I have it where I work, and get left behind to hold the fort.
I think this is unfair as I dont leave the premises to light up.

I have snooped around
Telstra allow unlimited smoking breaks ?
Westpac at Lockleys have banned unlimited breaks ?
My workplace is no restriction.

In my travels I have noticed many people at different times smoking.

What about yours, and whats your views?

bayman said:
in place of smoking add internet & betting breaks !! that'd probably even out for you mal ;)

pafc1870 said:
If I was running a workplace of some sort, smoke breaks would be totally banned. If you cant to a couple of hours without lighting up, theres something wrong with you. They dont do it because they need a smoke, but because they are lazy and dont want to work.

TroyGFC said:
Just noticed yesterday the Marion RSL club down Norfolk Ave is banning smoking as from 1st January in all inside and outside (bowling greens) areas. I think Colanades Tavern has done the same. Personally I like it.

On subject now- Mitsubishi has no smoking at all time besides b4 shift, during meal breaks and heatrelief, not that they have inforced it as supervisors having a break every hour for a fag.

ian said (in reply to bayman):

add to that coffee breaks, I know we have more time lost to the making and consuming coffee than smoking at work, and the biggest winger re: smokers would be one of the worse offenders with coffee (and a reformed smoker)

magpie in the 80s said:
as of the 1st of dec this year all clubs and pubs in canberra became smoke free venues. most clubs here are 2 storys so they each had to build open air landings to accomadate the smokers. i must say that numbers were down on friday night. will effect trade during winter here when the weather gets down to below zero. who would want to stand out in the freezing cold just to have a puff

Dutchy said:
Its an interesting dilema if your a boss, do you allow it and staff are happy or do you stop it and staff arent happy = less productive?

I used to work with a guy who used to go our for 5 min every hour of the day for a fag...however he always worked 1/2 hour extra after we left because he acknowledged he wasted the employers time by smoking...bet not many do that!!!

heater31 said:
disgusting habit smoking always hate having to pick up my clothes from a night out on the town and wash them. if im not chucking from a hangover then smoke drenched clothes certainly does tip me over the edge.

When is it outlawed in SA???????? recall somthing round 07, bloody hope that its the 1st

wedgie said:
Yeah I think you can't smoke in any pubs from Jan 1, could be wrong.
Time for me to give up as I only smoke when drinking.

another grub said:
Agree heater.... nothing worse than kissing a troll who has been smoking.... (unless she is hot)

BAN SMOKERS IN 2007.....

MW said:
My work has banned smoke breaks but now the loos smell like a high school toilet with the amount of smokers locking themselves in the cubicles

Snaggletooth Tiger said (in reply to TroyGFC):
Not to mention certain individuals sneaking a choof in the dunnies & blowing their tokes into the exhaust fan!

TroyGFC said (in reply to Snaggletooth Tiger):

Do you remember the old cleaner who used to ride that 3 wheeler bike around, he used to throw a bucket of water over toilet door and say I thought it was a fire.

Strawb07 said:
Where i work in retail we have a few smokers but they only go and have a puff during breaks and keep it to that. It works for them. I am a reformed smoker and i feel that we should keep bars segregated smokers on one side and non smokers on the other. It will work or soon we will have smokers with beer glasses out the front of pubs.

PhilG said (in reply to another grub):
A troll who smokes is NEVER EVER hot, Grub!

Really, the only way all this can be stopped is to bump the prices up, and by a big amount. I'd have the cheapest at $20 a packet. And make sure the extra goes into the health system nationwide. That'll probably cut the purchases - to leave the effect on the health system as minimal, but in the long term there will be more empty beds because of the decrease in smoking associated diseases.

I hate smoking. A waste of life IMO.

mal said (in reply to PhilG):
Having lost my Godfather and one of my best mates in the last 3 years to Lung cancer,
I must agree with your comments.
Great comment on more hospital beds as well.

the tractor said (in reply to another grub):
A hot troll?????????

I like them when I go to a restaurant with a bit of butter.
But not too hot though. Wink

I hate going to a pub nowadays.
Put on clean clothes when you start, stink like buggery when you come home.
Even with all the exhaust fans pubs have now days still doesn't do much to stop the stink!

A hot Ogre, now thats a different thing!

theres a bookie clerk who smokes and he leaves during the race and comes back with about a minute before the next, leaving the bagman who isnt computer orientated to ask everybody else to do his job...........

Up here in Qld, we seem to be leading the country in smoking restrictions where there has been a total indoor ban since July 1.
The only place smokers can light up at pubs/clubs is where they have a nominated outdoor area for them to go.

It's fantastic being able to go out and not having to deal with the damn smoke.
What really shits me though is working in the CBD and having to put up with all the smokers who often make walking around an unpleasant experience.

An American report stating that cigarette companies are increasing the
addictive nicotine levels in the ciggys.
From 1998 to 2005 the levels have increased by about 1.65% per year
SHAME SHAME SHAME

And junk food companies also continue to alledgedly include a substance
on thier burger buns to addict consumers as well.
SAME SHAME SHAME

Meanwhile cancer is still a major killer......

our_longreach said:
Cigarette and fast food companies have alot to answer for IMHO. It is inevitable that smoking will eventually be banned but it will probably take a couple of employers to get sued first, maybe even the government.

If governments weren't so short term focussed and looked at the long term benefits of a society that does not smoke, they would have outlawed it years ago. Maybe non smokers need to be more vocal to the government to make them listen??

What I still really dont get though is how anyone, knowing the adverse effects of smoking can continue the habit, addictions notwithstanding??

SMOKERS - YOU ARE KILLING YOURSELVES AND PAYING FOR THE PRIVILEGE - GIVE IT UP

scoob said:
In ireland it is illegal to smoke in any pub, in any building for that and it is brilliant! if it works in ireland...1 of the heaviest smoking/drinking countries in the world surely it would work here... fancy being behind the irish in something..haha...i know i would go to the local more often.

lunchcutter said (in reply to our_longreach):
never ceases to amaze me the amount of people that are only to willing to judge others on this issue FFS!

last i looked, i didn't see a rotting liver or a bashed up spouse on a bottle of bourbon or a carton of ale....

i fecken hate the double standards we tolerate as a society...

Punk Rooster (said in reply to Lunchcutter):
When I drink, I'm not harming anyone else.
Can smokers say the same thing?
Smoking is a very selfish habit- I cannot wait until it is outlawed

Lunchcutter said (in reply to Punk Rooster):
I cannot wait until judgemental comments from those who like to stand on their soapboxes are outlawed - 'specially on this site! if I want to smoke/kill myself (of course not around others harming them) what business is it of anyone's but mine!

also it can be argued that alcohol causes "harm" too (in more ways than one that's for sure)..... you going to outlaw poker machines too for all the "harm" they do too....

o well enough from me, im not one for tit for tat arguments.. Rolling Eyes OT - can anyone help with our split hull situation?

Constance Perm said:
I can appreciate what you're saying Lunchy ... Provided smokers aren't affecting other people's health in the process, why should society be able to pick and choose what should and shouldn't be outlawed?

Lunchcutter said (in reply to Constance Perm):
im fat and i smoke - reckon i get any grief from others.... Rolling Eyes

hehehehe here's a bumper sticker that was from the paper the other day - i reckon it's a classic....

"eat healthy, get fit - die anyway!"

i have nothing against those who are fit, dont smoke/drink etc, just wish they would leave me alone and also their opinions to themselves.

scoob said:
What about the cost on the heath system? Similar argument for people who eat fast food constantly and are obese... they are draining the resources of an already stretched system... that effects everyone!!! I think people can smoke and eat all the sh!t you like but when it comes to treating the effects bad luck!!!

rodrooster said (in reply to Constance Perm):
Should be able to tax it for the financial effect it has on society though (as is the case although probably not taxed highly enough IMO). This does not apply only to cigarettes either.

BTW Lunchcutter alcohol in moderation can in fact have medical benefits. Cigarettes in any quantity are harmful. This probably explains why there aren't the same images on alcohol packaging as cigarettes. Most alcohol packaging does advise people to drink responsibly though. I don't disagree with you on the consequences that alcohol abuse can have just offering a possible reason why it isn't subject to the same packaging images and slogans cigarettes are.

mal said (in reply to Lunchcutter):
Just another view point.
Ive lost one of my best mates to lung cancer in December and has affected me as I think
of him and cant sleep some nights.
I lost my Godfather to lung cancer 3 years ago, and that knocked the shit out of me as well.
Both smokers

Also when hospitals are crammed with people with smoke related illnesses they are using
beds which could have been given to other people.

Also when the f...heads tip thier ashes out of cars ......
Also passive smoking another issue.....
Also smoking women in pregnancy.......

THATS MY VIEWS.

Lunchcutter said (in reply to scoob):
mate i pay 200 bucks a months for private health insurance ... so i reckon bad luck to those of you who don't... and just for the record i do not eat fast food constantly - i am obese due to an underlying heath condition and I must admit not a strong liking for fruit and veggies - more coke and iced coffees... anyway enough about me....

Punk Rooster said (in reply to Lunchcutter):
Ever heard of passive smoking?
That's where selfish twats blow smoke in your face when your trying to talk/eat breathe... Vomit
Never heard of passive drinking.... Eh?

A pet hate- I don't smoke, yet have to pick up discarded butts from visiting smokers.
They are a lazy & selfish breed.

mighty_tiger_79 said:

my mum, myself and my brother still smoke even after spending endless nights and days in the intensive care at St Andrews.. maybe one day we will quit but the hold they have on us is sooooooo strong

scoob said (in reply to lunchcutter about medical insurance):

Lunchcutter said (in reply to Armytank):

the memories i have of my father are great thanks.. my dad had a great life - died at 69 years of age - and no it was not incentive enough (luckily my father did not go through much pain he was gone within three months of diagnoses) Sad - I am a believer in fate and believe our death is pre-ordained from the start... sorry to frustrate so much people on here but surely I can have my own opinions/thoughts on issues too.

Lets get things in perspective LUNCHY
As an individual it is your divine right to be a smoker.
What happens to your health etc is entirely your call.
Most smokers are norMAL human beings, some dimwitted, some intelligent, some famous
some Catholics, some muslims, some athiests.
So in general smokers are not lepers, they are norMAL people.
The actions of a minority of smokers does affect the way I and others live.
The above examples thru the posts submitted by others shows that there is a concern
about smoking in our lives.

As is drinking = deaths on our roads as well.

I gave up full time smoking about five or six years ago. Since that date I have only smoked on holidays, during which I will smoke about a pack a day until the holidays are finished. I love it! But I do realise that when I smoked everyday I wasn't as capable of living life as fully as what I do now. Too much of any good thing will kill you.
What craps me about travelling through Australia is that it is one of the few places in the world that has completely non-smoking airports! Would it be that hard to put a balcony, or a smoking room in Adelaide, or Tullamarine International? It is a case of we are only hurting ourselves, no one else would be affected at all by our smoking in a smoking section while waiting hours on end for a flight, which in turn takes hours on end.
P.S Those lazy bums making 15 people wait in queue, the dicks that flick their butts everywhere, etc... they're the bastards that spoil it for us ex-pats looking to return for a relaxing stay back home.

Punk Rooster said (in reply to lunchcutter):

I used to go to pubs, but now I have a lung problem.[not from smoking]
One of the last times I went to the Settlers Pub I met
Dissident and PAFC but was in and out within 20 minutes.
If I stay in a pub for the duration, my clothes wreathe of smoke and my eyes
water, and I find it tough to breathe properly.
When the pub abolishes smoking I will go back.

My first fag was in 1968 when I was 10 years old.
A group of us Primary school kids went along the gutters outside the school
picked up the ciggys and extracted the left over tobacco, which we rolled
into the hollow whites of 3/4 smoken ciggys.
And we smoked because it was daring and cool[groovy in those days]
The perception was granduer because adults smoked and there was not much
adverse publicity.
Enter 2007 and I wonder how many 10 year old kids are doing the same.......

Sorry about the formatting (took me forever) but that was about the clearest I could do, couldn't be bothered putting dates in but it gives people the general gist of it if the convo is to be carried on. (there might be some confusion where smilies were too, sorry about that)

Er, no. Smoking sucks. Cigarettes are addictive and many people find it quite difficult to quit. The education process that has been going on for quite some time now has led to Australia having one of the lowest rates of Smokers in the Western World. Next target, obesity.
