The allrounder Jacob Oram will have knee surgery next week that will rule him out of the Champions League Twenty20 in another painful chapter to a career plagued by injury. Scans showed damage to Oram's patella tendon and he is now hoping to return for Pakistan's visit in December. He has been replaced by the 18-year old allrounder Ben Wheeler, who played in the Under-19 World Cup this year.

Shaun Tait, the South Australia fast bowler, has said quick bowlers will relish bowling on the fresh pitches in South Africa during the Champions League Twenty20. He has been in top form this year, reclaiming a regular place in Australia's limited-overs sides and sending down one of the fastest deliveries in history - 161.1kmh at Lord's in July.

"South Africa's always traditionally been a good place to bowl quick," Tait said. "I think the wickets usually offer quite a bit, and some of the grounds offer altitude, where the ball reportedly travels quicker through the air. I think the fast bowlers are licking their lips."

The Redbacks went down by five wickets to Wayamba in their final practice game on Tuesday. They kick off their campaign against South Africa's Lions on Sunday and also have Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Guyana in their group.

An unbeaten half-century to opener Dan Harris has guided the South Australia WestEnd Redbacks to a strong seven wicket win over New Zealand outfit the Central Stags in their opening warm-up match for the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 Tournament in South Africa.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Stags were restricted to 8-146 after some late wickets pegged back the total.

In reply, Harris (57*) combined with some lusty hitting from Graham Manou (55 off 27) to make sure the Redbacks passed the score for the loss of just three wickets with 3.5 overs to spare.

All-rounder Dan Christian finished as the pick of the bowlers with 4-31, while beanpole quick Peter George also claimed a tidy 3-16 from only three overs, including a double-wicket maiden.

The South Australia West End Redbacks have suffered a five-wicket loss to Wayamba in their second and final warm-up match ahead of their Airtel Champions League Twenty20 campaign getting underway on Sunday.

Batting first, the Redbacks made 8-155 on a pretty good pitch at Centurion with Dan Christian top scoring with 44, while Cam Borgas played important role through the middle overs with a solid 38.


In reply, the Wayamba chase was steady as experienced international Mahela Jayawardena led from the front with 56, and was well supported by Jeewantha Kulatunga (32) with an opening partnership of 94 setting up a win with 10 balls to spare.

Christian backed-up his handy work with the bat to finish with two wickets (2-17), while Jake Haberfield, Cullen Bailey and Dan Harris all chipped in with one wicket each.

The tournament starts on Friday night on One HD and the Redbacks first game against Highveld Lions is on Sunday night at 11:35pm. Victoria plays their first game against the Warriors on Monday night on at 12:45am.
