Amatuer Games as Curtain Raisers

With the idea of increasing attendences at SANFL games, I am interested to know if the idea of having an amatuer league game as a curtain raiser to an SANFL game has been considered?

The format would be along the lines of reserves, amatuer then the League clash. In this scenario the reserves would have to play the early game.

The reason that I suggest this is the number of people that go to amatuer games can be quite a number. When Modbury are playing at Ridgehaven, the streets are packed with cars. It is my thoughts that the potential crowd increase could be 500-1000.

All those that play, spectate and official are footy fans, by having both games at an SANFL ground, all those folks get to stay on and watch the SANFL sides do battle afterwards.

If Sturt played North Adelaide, you could have a curtain raiser of Goodwood Saints vs the Kilburn Chicks first. Both of those clubs are well supported and would likely bring in quite a few extra people to the game.

personally i dont like it & it'll never happen for numerous reasons if they played a game at an sanfl ground the sanfl club will get the revenue from food etc not the amatuer club that depend on bbq's etc on saturdays, also the gate & plenty of other reasons

good thinking sojourner but the amauteur league clubs rely on home games to make there money for beer sales, bbq sales, canteen sales etc plus there is also more atmosphere at the games. if played at a sanfl ground they would have to pay to get in and it would lack the atmosphere

Maybe then the solution could be to offer the clubs concerned a % of the gate or takings at the ground? Players and officials would naturally be given a pass to get in.

I realise that I have put up several suggestions in recent days on the forum here, realize that I dont always state my own position on an idea, prefering to put an unbiased idea up for discussion. I am very much a passionate member of the South Adelaide football club and my passion if you like extends to the whole SANFL competition irrespective of which club is playing, I have no problem watching any SANFL game whenever. Yet what really annoys me and pisses me off is to see empty seats at the SANFL grand final, then two weeks later see Football Park a sell out for the Gaelic AFL footy match.

Yet by the same token it is that that also gives me some hope. If Gaelic footy can sell out Football Park as a novelty then surely it is possible to sell out the Grand Final each year. I am concerned that the SANFL is not doing enough to promote footy. I see them as doing what they always have done which is great, yet times are changing fast, SANFL clubs have a lot more competition for supporters than ever before. It is in the face of that challenge that maybe the thinking does have to become "lateral".

Could the SANFL sell out the Grand Final and have an average attendace of 5000 at each SANFL game this year? I think so, yet that requires work and effort and new ideas, still if people are motivated to see that happen, anything is possible.

As mentioned it's good lateral thinking but unfortunately would be as insulting to the amateurs as it is to us when it is suggested the SANFL plays its matches as Cows/Puffs curtain raisers.

Wouldn't mind it I guess, don't mind going to the odd ammo game a couple of times a year - normally on a Bays bye week. Good to see Broadview Tiges as a curtain raiser, be better for Saturday night games though with ammos starting about 2:30pm then 2nds and league at twilight.
