Finals Queries

Gday Spelly

A couple of questions regarding this year's potential finals make up:

How many times in the final five system have the Elimination finalists played each other the week before, and how many times has this been for the last position in the final? Has the team that started the last roud out of the finals ever won both games?

Has a team, in the final five system, ever come from outside the five and jumped in the Qualifying Final as Sturt could do? Has a team ever been 3rd before the last round and missed the finals?

Centrals and Glenelg look like finishing at least 3 games ahead of the next sides. Is this the biggest gap between the top two and the rest? Only other years I could think of would be Port/North in 89 and Centrals/Eagles in 04. What is the biggest gap a Qualifying finalist has overcome to either reach the GF and then win it?

and while we're at it:

It is possible that Central or Glenelg could play the other team 3 times in a row, thanks to the final round fixture and finals mechanism. Has this happened before? (Any team, not just Central or Glenelg)

The closest I can remember is Sturt and the Bays 3 times in 4 weeks in '76 ... IIRC last minor round game, QF and Prelim.

I'm sure Spelly will prove me wrong and come up with the real answer.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Norwood defeated Port twice in 1973 - Norwood needed to win, and Central to lose to get in. This is the only occasion where a team was out of the five.
Norwood defeated South twice in 1984 - both were destined to play each other after Round 21
Glenelg defeated Sturt twice in 1988 - Glenelg needed North to lose if they lost themselves

No, because no team has ever moved more than two places in the last round.

Glenelg were 6 games clear of Sturt and Torrens in 1980. For a 20 round season, Eagles were 4 matches ahead of Sturt and North in 2004. Port in 1996 were two games behind Central and Norwood; however, Norwood in 1978 had the biggest gap between them (2nd) and 1st (Sturt, 6 wins) to overcome that.

Thanks Spelly. Just realised my question is not quite right as Sturt go into the final round already in the five, so don't have to win this week.
So no team other than Port in 96 have finished 2 or more games behind the top two and won the GF? (Obviously there the two teams that won from the elimination final).

In 1950, Norwood played Glenelg in the final minor round, 2nd Semi, and Grand Final.

Hey Spelly,

Another query re the final 5.

With the real possibility of west finishing with 11 wins and still missing the final 5, I was wondering if this was a record or are there any instances of more wins but missing the 5.

Thanks in advance.

It would be a record for the current set up - i.e. 9 teams, 20 rounds. West and Central in 1999 and Glenelg in 2006 all had 10 wins.

A question related to this, but which might not be covered by your answer to it:

Has any team, in the final 5 system, ever been in the position that Sturt is in now, i.e. before the last round, both able to secure the double chance and able to miss the finals? (Compounding the rarity, neither outcome would require shocking results-- mild surprises maybe, but nothing like, say, the bottom team flogging the 3rd team by 15 goals.)

Just to chuck in another one Spelly, what's the least number of wins recorded to earn the double chance over the years? (ie, will Norwood/WWT or Sturt go close to that this year)

Another one Spelly
Since the final five has been introduced, how many times has a team potentially been able to play all the other teams in the finals the next week? Or up to five teams as is the case this year? Has it ever been more than five? I doubt there would have ever been a circumstance where three teams, NWD, WWT, ST are all in that position.
2007 is one year which comes to mind where there was a number of changes due to results.

Central were so far in front in 2007, that couldn't happen. I think 2006 was one, where we could have finished 2nd if we lost and North won; then we could have played South or Glenelg even in the Qualifying Final if Central lost their match.
