Michael Bevan retires

Former SA/NSW and now TAS left hand bastman Michael Bevan has
retired from domestic cricket citing injuries and pain as the reasons.

Some stats.

232 o/d internationals ave 53-58
that is the 3rd highest average in o/d cricket after Hussey and ***Pieterson[sorry AH]

18 tests ave 29-07

1464 runs pura cup 2004-2005 a record
played 9 games and hit 8 centurys
ave 97-60
2nd best is Matthew Elliott with 1381 runs

A gifted batsman who made his mark in the o/d arena with his brilliant running
between wickets and his uncanny ability to steer his team home in the last few
balls of a o/d match.

His test career was disapointing as International bowlers exploited a weakness
with short pitched deliveries to him.
Surprisingly enough in Domestic cricket I have seen him play some terrific
shots off short balls.
He was one decent score of being a good test batsman.
Bevan also bowled some unpredictable left hand wrist spin and at one stage
was bowling well in tandam with Warrrrrrrrrney.

At 34 years old and playing for his new state Tasmania he scored 1464 runs
that was unbelievable as I reckon TAS finished last in the pura cup ?

Along with Martyn/Langer/Warne/Mcgrath and now Bevan we have lost a
generation of talented and maybe irreplaceable cricketers.

Bevan started his 1st class career with SA when he was here with the Cricket Academy in 1989-90. Played most of the season, would have averaged around 30 I guess.

I wonder how people knew he began his cricket in the ACT as a fast bowler?

Todays press said Bevan was arguably the best o/d cricketer we have had.
That is a big statement.
He had the ability ala Mike Hussey to be not out at the end[hence a great average]

Still he has an average just above Kevin Pieterson, so that must mean something.

Well done to Bevan on a fine career but the fact that he played only 18 tests is a lot more telling than a high one day average. When you don't take risks and bat out till the end of the innings then it stands to reason you will have a high average. The only stats that matter in one dayers is how many and how quickly. Bevan stands up in the former but falls down in the latter.

His Pura Cup season of 1464 in 9 games is one for the ages, don't think that will be broken for a while.

The season could have been even better, considering he missed Tasmania's first Pura Cup match through injury and had he not been the only one carrying Tasmania that year and they made the final, he potenially could have had another 4 innings!

I still say he should have toured England!

Also - didn't Dan Marsh just move here to get out of WA. I don't think he moved here as an Academy player, but I could be wrong.

Dan Marsh moved here with his family when Rod Marsh took up a coaching role with the Academy. He played for Sturt, and was also included in the Cricket Academy.

Stuart Law never played for SA. He would have played, but if their home state wanted to pick them before they were selected for SA, then they could. Thus, Law played for Queensland instead.

Chuck Berry also played for SA before returning to Victoria. Shane Warne could have played for SA but he didn't last long in the academy.
