I think ruckmen are over-rated. We seem to do okay with 1....and you lot think He's a lumbering joke too!

Well done, Einstein. You were talking about your perceived lack of ruckmen on THIS THREAD, so I just stated my opinion.

West didn't take their chances yesterday and Sturt were much cleaner in skills, therefore deserving the win.

On the umpiring, we all think we get a bad run most of the time, but this is now the second time in recent weeks where even the opposition supporters have all agreed that West were killed by the umpires.

What bothers me most about that isn't just the goals that result (yesterday several to Sturt while West didn't get a free inside 50), but the effect it has on momentum and the morale of both sides.

Anyway, I look forward to next week with more optimism than most Westies on here.

Ive got this game on tape
Ive seen only the first qtr late last night
Am reviewing the first qtr again after reading the comments about the umpiring

FIRST 5 MINS
Young Joshua the drummer tossed the coin, ST win the very high tosS and kick with a strongish breeze
Minute by minute review
1 HARDING held no free , middle of the ground
1 WILLETTS dragged off the ball by Bowen no free, wing
2 EZARD appeared to be tackled high by SHEEDY, might have been a free to EZARd in the middle
3 MCGLONE got a free for holding on , it appeared he was bustled off the ball, lucky free, WA half fwd line
4 FERGUSON ducked into a Chambo tackle, fortunate free kick, Chambo argues with the ump, ST F-Pocket
4 CARUSO held, then pushed in the back by Vassall , should have been a free, no free, Middle
5 GILES pushes FERGUSON blatantly in the back, ball spills to Giles again who handballs to Chambo for a goal

Hard fought first 5 minutes
Both sides going in extra hard, ST looked pumped after a softish endeavour v PA last game
7 decisons in the first 5 minutes
6 went in ST favour [in my opinion]
The GILES pushing FERGY in the back was the blooper of them all

I apologies in advance for getting off topic, but are these umpires accountable to anyone? Surely if mal picks this up in just 5 mins of play, then there are issues that need to be addressed here. The SANFL is now a "semi-professional" league, yet amateur at best umpiring.

Sturt were easily the better team on the day and thoroughly deserve their win. We all agree that West got the short end of the stick with the umpiring, but what the frees and subsequent goals do is take away any momentum west had, such as late in the 3rd Q.

Nevertheless, to not score a goal with the wind is unforgivable. Bottom line is despite the woeful umpiring we still had our chances, such as Fielke's set shot 45m out early in the final quarter which would have made it a kick the difference, but were not good enough to capitalise.

I hope Im wrong, but I sense we have run out of petrol and are staggering to the finish line and may drop either the Port or South game.

Any ideas when Lobbe will be back from injury?

AC V BL
ST might rue the BL V AC game ?
VINCE and KNIGHTS[pulled his Wattostring again] injured , and may be season ending injuries
That might mean JAENSCH and MARTIN return to bolster the midfield

RICHMOND OVAL
The West Torrens Council are intending to sell off some Floodlights and Towers at Richmond Oval
WHY ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

ADELAIDE NOW
Very damning report in the umpiring
Notice that Willetts had a free kick count at
0 for
5 against
Will have to view this on the tape becoz Willo was very unlucky not to recieve a free kick in the first 5 mins of this game

FIRST QTR 6MINS TO END
WA 0-0...ST1-0

HOLDING THE BALL
I will in advance say that the umpires were very tolerant of the holding the ball interpretation
Gutsy players from both sides burrowed in and made the ball thier objective
It was refreshing to see the umps protect the guys who make the play
I have also disregarded SOME frees when it didnt penalise the side and an advantage was obtained

6 HERRING marks was pushed after the mark should have been 50m and a goal,
didnt matter shortly after PIASENTE kicked out on the full and SHEEDY goaled
8 SHEEDY tackles FIELKE too high, no free, Middle
9 BOWEN scragged by WILLETTS and gets a free in front of goal and kicks ST 3rd goal
The free was there no doubt, but WILLETTS would be fumimg as 8 minutes earlier BOWEN scragged him and it was not a free, poor umpiring
12 WILLETTS scragged GILES in a ruck contest in the middle free to GILES , WILLETTS would be very confused by now , what he can and cant do
18 BLESSING drags it in, tackled by HERRING [another HTB not paid] FISHER drags HERRING off the contest, no free HF line for ST [should have been]
19 MARTIN takes on 2 tacklers in the middle of the ground, when tackled by 2 players the ball spills, free to MARTIN , WA having no luck in the 50/50 decisions again
22 MUNN should have been pinged HTB , but none were paid all qtr, CHAMBO argues with the ump, MUNN gets a free kick, thats bullcrapp

ST9
WA 4
Clearly ST gained an advantage and were lucky to lead at qtr time
WA 1-1
ST3-0
At this stage WA did well to stay in the game
PIASENTE injured WA had to play 1 short

NorMALly we have about 13 iffy decisions in a game, to have them all in a qtr was ...

2ND QTR
1 HERRING throws BLESSING to the ground no free ST HF line
1 HASSAN pulls CAIRE of the ball, cannot believe that was missed ST HF line, absolute shocker
2 CARUSO tackled by NELSON, threw the ball no free for ST though WA HF line
8 SYLVESTER dragged from a pack ST FP no free
9 FISHER drops a mark and gets hit front on by VASSAL in a charge, FISHER staggers appears dazed, can u believe no free, terrible decision
10 DAVIES and MORRIS might have fluked frees for high tackles, WA cant seem to get a charity free kick
13 GREEN pushes HASSAN in the back at full forward and a goal results, lots of BOOOOOing, but good decision
16 HARDING spins out of pack and gets caught holding the ball, yes I agree, but about 6 other holding the balls were not paid previously, WA cant take a trick
21 FERGUSON gathers a loose ball lowers himself is claimed by HERRING , paid in the back, but was more holding the ball and should have resulted in a ST free at half forward
WA 1-5
ST4-0
Great defence by the ST back 8 or 9
sheedy , jeansch, martin were brilliant in saving the Blues into the breeze, which dropped during the qtr according to the ABC lads

SUMMARY
20 vrs 24 in the first half after PIASANTE was injured .....

UMPIRES DESCISIONS FAVOURING
WA 6
ST 14

Arguably the sides could have been even at half time
WA have had not much go thier way
Both sides 7-9 man defences on top

Saw bits and pieces of the game (totalling about %70 of the match) ... Thought Sturt got a clear rub of the green for sure, but to me they always looked as though they had come to play and their class edge was evident right throughout the day - The Bloods were courageous in defeat, but lacked anywhere near the polish of the Double Blues.

Jade Sheedy's BOG was one of the clearest, most obvious 3 vote games I think I've ever seen - Always been a massive fan of this bloke and thought he might be ready to start slowing down, but bugger me he's still a champion.

John Hinge needs to spend less time playing for free kicks and questioning the umps as to why he hasnt received them, and just play footy .. He has talent and should be contributing a great deal more than I've seen from him this year.

Friday night v the Blues promises to be a huge match and with any sort of decent weather I reckon it gets a pretty big crowd .. If either team is allowed to play their best footy they win, if both are or neither are, you could almost flip a coin.

Great effort (so far?), MAL.

It didn't improve after that.

Well done to Jai Bednall on that AdelaideNow article. It's rare that journalists spell out umpiring one-sidedness like that.

Bravo Jai - Pitty monday morning cutterman isnt in hardcopy print (Or am I wrong?)

I went to the game with a sturt friend who while happy his side won, didnt want to talk about the game as he felt embarrassed by the officials on the day - Take the win I told him - Its not your fault they were one-sided!
