My first SANFL game

Postby pels » Wed Jul 21, 2010 7:21 am

My cousin & I were trying to remember my first SANFL game he took me to.
Port thumped Norwood at the parade is all we remember either 78,79 or 80.
We think it was 79 but not sure.
Wondering if you can get us the results of the games at the parade for those 3 years

Thanks

I'd be interested in this game too as it's likely the first one I can remember attending and had always thought it was 1980 for some reason

The first SANFL game I can actually remember going to was the 1990 Port v Glenelg GF as a 10 year old with my Magpies supporter older step-brother and his Dad.

Apart from watching the highlights of Doggies games on the news and reading about it in the paper, I guess I never really appreciated the SANFL back then as a youngster, I was too enthralled in playing footy myself and watching the AFL on the telly.

Then my life changed forever when my Dad took me to my first live Doggies games. It was some time in season 1991, Central played the Bays at Elizabeth and I don't remember who won on the day, but that was the turning point for me when I fell in love with the SANFL.

Still continued playing footy myself on and off as a teenager but played a couple of seasons of Under 17's football where we played on a Sunday so I could get to all the Doggies games the day before.

Have been to probably 90% of Centrals games played (and plenty of other neutrel games) since about 1993 onwards and now can't stand the AFL and absolutely love our great SANFL competition.

So anyway, yeah, Port V Glenelg 90 GF was my first game of SANFL I remember attending.

I went to a few games in the early 1960s when I was a little tacker but although I knew I was at the footy, I was more interested in playing with other kids than watching the game. I have vague memory of being at Kensington Oval one day.

First game I attended that I watched was Norwood v Sturt at Norwood Oval in 1965. I was immediately impressed by Ian Brewer (5 goals), Haydn Bunton and of course Bill Wedding and Ron Kneebone. For Sturt I recall Rick Schoff, John Halbert, John Murphy and Keith Chessell wearing number 1. Norwood won by 10 points. The following week we beat Port by 20. Come Grand Final day, Port played Sturt and it didn't make much sense to me because we beat them both :)

I was convinced Sturt would be Premiers after that game .. There was just something different about them in that game than I'd seen from them in recent years.

Of course a season is a long time and I might have changed my opinion had they gone off the rails, but they didn't and I always thought they'd go on to take out the flag.

Always be my favourite GF win.

First game was round 1, 1980, Port v Central at Elizabeth.

Draw.

As a neutral supporter, I reckon that's the best GF I've seen not involving my own team .. Beautiful weather, sensational game of footy, awesome after-party at Alberton (until the riot police decided it was a good idea to close it down)

What a bloody night. I got the arse from my job that day and decided to have a few beers on Parade and watch the Redlegs pound the Blues. There was a lot of hype about the Legs that year as we had a pretty good side that year and we looked like we could go all the way.

However 2002 was Sturt's year and we couldn't beat them all year long (despite having the wood on the Dogs that season). Our season started and finished the same way.....in a disappointing loss to Strut dammit!

regards,

Have randomnly caught highlights on TV over the years, usually past-midnight.

Four unanswered goals just before half-time pretty much got us over the line. Tense last fifteen minutes as the Bays stormed home. And we were spent!

Favourite moment is probably Wayne Mahney's goal from about 50m.

Few minutes before he cracked McDermott while fighting for the ball at the bottom of the pack. Almost straight away Bones squares-up. Knees first into Mahney's ribs. Free kick. Nobody thought Mahney had a hope-in-hell of making the distance, never mind kicking the goal.

Except for '83, which was at least a contest, every other GF I've been to as a neutral was a bit of a fizzer - '85, '86, '91 and '93.

Though '86 was perversely interesting - at least for the first half - because everyone was in shock at how the match was unfolding...

This threads' initial question was answered before I could get to it. However, I noticed this and it was:

Round 7 1991
Central 3.7 8.8 15.9 19.11 (125)
Glenelg 1.2 6.4 10.6 16.11 (107)
Elizabeth, 4019

Earliest one I can recall was Torrens Vs West at Richmond. I was fascinated by the BIG eagle on the jumpers. Would have been '63,64/5/. We used to say at West Beach Caravan Park when in the big smoke, so I'm guessing it was school hols. Normally Dad had us off to the Bay, Alberton or Adelaide Oval for the best match around. I guess proximity to where we were staying (or an easy bus ride). For the life of me I can't fathom why we went to this game - Torrens & West never figured highly in any family discussions on footy.

So Spelly - the challenge is why??!! Anything close to a decent game "on paper" in this period between the 2? Any milestone games. Could be that Dad just wanted to see Lindsay Head play? (I remember us be taken to Prospect once just to see Robran!). Cheers.

Central at the Bay in 1973.

Scores, crowd and weather thanks.

Oh, and who won the flag that year?
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

It's possible you might be thinking about Round 1 1965 - 17th of Arpil the match was played on. School holidays I know have changed over the years, so if that's when it was, the date I have given may help you:

Round 1 1965
West 4.0 5.2 7.5 10.5 (65)
Torrens 2.2 4.4 5.6 7.9 (51)
Richmond, 5441

And in 1973:
Round 6 1973
Glenelg 4.7 13.10 20.15 27.19 (181)
Central 7.3 10.6 13.12 20.14 (134)
Glenelg, 12957

Fine and 19.1 degrees on that day; one of 23 wins Glenelg collected to the flag.

The West Torrens game wasn't school holidays, but it was in fact Easter. I remember that Port beat Glenelg by 3 points that day, North beat Central and Woodville had their first ever win against an established side when they beat Norwood. Sturt must have played South today in what would have been the match of the round, but I don't remember that game at all.

The Richmond crowd is rather small, even by West standards for those days, especially given the following Torrens had in those days.

mine was South's last home game at Adelaide Oval. I think they tore the Eagles a new one that day and my Eagles supporting Dad wasn't overly impressed.

I also recall a kid in the mini League (full oval game  ) at half time breaking his leg in the first minute of their game
