Some want to "downgrade" Centrals premierships, saying they are not worth what they used to. Considering over the next few years before the Crows, 9 of those Glenelg players found their way to the VFL, should we view Port's 3-in-a-row as being a lesser achievement too?

The VFL/AFL exodus was certainly on by the mid/late-80s.

FWIW, 10 players from Port's 1988-89-90 premiership teams played in the VFL/AFL with varying degrees of success - Brown, Delaney, Hodges, Hynes, Leslie, Obst, Smith (x2), Tregenza, Wanganeen.

Another 5 players returned from the VFL/AFL, again with varying degrees of success - Abernethy, Harris, Phillips, Williams (x2).

While Darren Mead spent most of his time in the reserves before making the grade years later. Troy Bond played in the reserves losing 1990 GF side.

Not including those that were recruited from VFL clubs - Johnston, Foster, Rizonico.

I guess my comment was someways provactive, as the same could be said for those Glenelg premieships - Glenelg won those premieships after and during Port lost Abernethy, Willams, Phillips, Hughes, Anderson, Bradley. Really, from the early 80's, all premieships were somewhat compromised by the VFL. Glenelg certainly lost the talent to make a dynasty like Port in the 50s and Sturt in the 60s, but of course you could argue they could have easily created their dynastyn in the 70's.
Perhaps talent-wise Centrals premirships aren't what they were pre-AFL, but their ability to adapt to the new situation better than anyone deserves full credit, perhaps moreso frustratingly that my team were probabaly in the position to do it first, but didn't take the opportunity.

IIRC Bradley Hughes and Anderson were all in Adelaide when we won our first flags and I think the '86 Magarey medalist was there when we won our 2nd....

Really it was only Abernethy and Williams who weren't there in those two flags and if those two were still in the SANFL in '85 I wouldn't have minded having Weston and Hodgy around too.

As I stated a couple of years ago on here I regard the end of '85 as the turining point in the "battle" to retain players from the VFL. It stated at teh end of 1980 when 10 players of the caliber of Williams, Cousins, White, Phillips (IIRC) etc went over.

In the ensuing years the likes of ABernethy, Hodgeman, Weston et al ventured over but it was the end of '85 when McGuinness, Bradley, Kernahan, Naley, Motley, Hughes etc went to the VFL that the die was cast. Players continued to go over in the following years and some came back (Phillips, Abernethy, Symonds). Then the boil was finally lanced in 1990.

My dream game would be a replay of the 1990 Port and Glenelg GF with all our then VFL stars back (hey I know it was AFL in 1990 but we know it was just a name change).

I reckon Port would've had the best Centre line in the country in 1990 - Abernethy, Bradley and Anderson and close to the best half back line in Leslie, Phillips and Northeast. However our best half forward line in Australia - Hall, Kernahan and Jameson would've been too much for them, IMO.

Both centre squares whilst lacking a recognised ruckman (apologies to Hynes who was damn good) but chuck in both Williams v our two Macs and it would be a beauty of a contest along with our centreman of Marshall.

As I said a dream game of mine Port may have still won but sh!t I would sell my first born for tickets to that game....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

18 out of the 20 plaed either VFL/AFL or interstate footballer. The odd 2 out being W STringer, who could have easily, and Kidney. I actually thought that the Bays in 1985 and Port in 1980 were the best two teams of that era, but a lot seem to go for Westies in 1983.

1985 was when the floodgates seemed to open on SANFL player losses to the VFL. Prior to that enough stars stayed here for us fans to convince ourselves our worst fears weren't happenning.

As to why, I reckon the VFL recruiters got wind of the impending change in the recruiting landscape of the VFL National draft and pillaged our SANFL stars before the first VFL draft at the end of the 1986 season.

They likely used the upcoming draft to convince Sticks and co to sign with Carlton (or their club of choice) while they could before they got drafted by someone like the Brisbane Bears.

Just a theory. There has to be some reason for the sudden step up in departures to the VFL at the end of 1985. The WAFL got similarly raided by VFL clubs with forewarned knowledge of the introduction of the WCE.

Back on topic, I rate that 1985 Bays team as one of the best of all time. I think Port's 79-81 premiership stars were retired or too old and not replenished properly rather than their decline being caused by VFL recruiting.

Personally, i don't think you can really compare. The amount of playes going to the VFL progressively increased throughout the 80's thats a fact, but with the introduction of the Crows it ripped the guts out of the SANFL. It became a feeder competition, and to a large extent has been since 1991.

There was a massive difference in just 2 years - 1990 pre Crows, and the following year with an AFL club in Adelaide.

Everyone has their own perspectives, and i'm not trying to get into a debate about things. But to me the premierships won in 88-90 meant a hell of a lot more than that won by my club in 92.

He certainly was. I was sitting down by the fence at the northern end in '86. I vividly remember some feral portonian female dragging her crotchfruit down to the fence at half time and hoisting him up, beseeching him to wave at Ando as he was driven past.

I'm not sure that Danny Hughes was playing for Port in 85/86. He was playing for Melbourne at that time I think.

There was also Phillips (playing in Melbourne), in addition to Abernethy and Williams. I don't think Port would have beaten the Bays in a grand final in 85/86 even with Phillips and Abers, although the gap would have been considerably smaller between the 2 clubs.

Yeah, Danny Hughes left at the end of '83.

Dwayne Russell is another who would've played...

In the grand final between the 2 clubs in 88, i recall Mark Hewitt (quite an under rated player) playing on the wing, presumably with Symonds on the other.

IIRC, he played pretty well that day. Never stopped trying...

A full-strength Port team at the time might look something like this...

F: David Brown, Scott Hodges, Tim Ginever
HF: Stephen Williams, Dwayne Russell, Darren Smith
C: Greg Anderson, Craig Bradley, Simon Tregenza
HB: Martin Leslie, Greg Phillips, Bruce Abernethy
B: George Fiacchi, Danny Hughes, Roger Delaney
R: David Hynes, Mark Williams, Andrew Obst
Int: Russell Johnston, Gavin Wanganeen

Bring it on, am!

Thought Hughes left a bit alter but wasn't 100% sure, forgot about russell too.

Yeah our side would've been

F: Liptak Fidge Lamb
HF: Hall S Kernahan Jameson
C: Symonds Marshall Rouvray
HB: D Kernahan Seebohm Grenvold
B: Gibbs West Thompson
R: Henwood McDermott McGuiness
Int: Christie Salisbury

No spot for Chiggy, Murphy, Bartlett or Donovan (premiership or AFL list players).

Yep, bring it on MP.

FWIW Squawk, AH, CP, norwood would/ve had a fair side then too how would've that stacked up in 1990 add Kelly Francis etc to their 1990 squad.

The Norwood team of 1990 would be:
F; Andrew Pascoe, James Weeding, Keith Thomas
HF: Andrew Jarman, Rodney Maynard, David Payne
C: Grant Tanner, Garry McIntosh, Andrew Zimmerman
HB: Jerry D'Antiochia, Tom Warhurst, Justin Scanlon
B: Lester Ross, Craig Balme, Matthew Robran
Ruck: David Pittman, Michael Aish, Stephen Rowe
Int: John Hall, Brett James, Brenton Klaebe

Yeah, the side looks good on paper, but we were thrashed by Port in the last minor round, then belted by South in the Elimination Final, so I'm not sure if adding Tony Francis and Craig Kelly would have made all that much difference.

That's a tough call on Murphy AM! He was pretty important to the Bays in 1990 from memory. As good as West and Seebohm were I reckon I'd prefer Murphy in for one of them.

I agree on Donovan and Bartlett though.

Looking at that team I reckon Port would have had the edge in 1990 but not back in 1985. I think the transition from one power to another was on even ignoring the AFL listed players. I'd like to see Alan Stringer in that Bays team for example but he was gone by then. That Bays side is still very strong however I look at the benches when comparing teams and you have Wanganeen/Johnston v Christie/Salisbury.

Here's North off the top of my head (i am sure I have missed a few but gee on a dry day it would be hard to stop!)
