AFL listed players qualified for SANFL finals

Postby Big Phil » Thu Aug 05, 2010 10:55 pm

I notice there is a link on the AdeliadeNow site saying in the footy liftout in tomorrow's Advertiser, they will list who has so far qualified for SANFL finals of those currently on AFL lists.

Will make for interesting reading, comment and discussion but of course, is not a guarantee that they will actually participate in the SANFL finals as they have to be given the all clear by their AFL clubs.

I guess the exception to that rule will be Josh Carr at the Bays who has retired from the Power so he can do what he wants.

Assume link will be up tomorrow, will post it then...

Not 100% sure, but I think from Central, the following have qualified:

Ricky Henderson
Jack Gunston
Jonathon Griffin

Jay Nash
Matthew Westhoff

I reakon Justin Westhoff and Brad Symes need another couple of SANFL games each to qualify with the 5 games, but not likely to happen at this stage I would suggest.

For the bloods

Harding
Lobbe
Davenport (this week will be his 5th I believe)
Pettigrew
Schmidt

Porplyzia I think has to play 2 or 3 more for him to qualify.

Pretty sure Moran wont qualify if he gets back from injury even though he hasn't played AFL this year.

Sometimes players are credited games when their home side has the bye as well. Porps has fronted twice and was available with a bye so I think? he needs two more for westies as does H. Hartlett (I think?) - Davenport one more after this week

Had been thinking about this for a few days now and was going to start up its own thread.

Who do you think gets the most advantage out of the players they could possibly have back.

Presuming everyone who is qualified drops back and plays SANFL finals (probably wont happen) i think Central are in a great position getting Griffin and Henderson back.

Ruck and CHF are probably the two positions Central are struggling to fill at the moment and having them back there would be massive, Griffin is the perfect foil for MacKenzie and Henderson is playing brilliantly at AFL level, if he brings that attitude back to the SANFL he could possibly be the X-Factor of the finals. He can play any position on the ground and at 6ft plus has an enourmous leap which makes him almost impossible to match up on.

If they did come back i would think Sutherland and M.Westoff/J.Gunston would be the ones to make way, they would be massive ins considering they havent played with us since the first half of the season and both were on fire while playing at the Dogs.

Personally i think we will get Henderson back but Griffin may be held due to the chance of being be de-listed or asking for a trade again.

I think all teams except probably Norwood and Sturt would be boosted fairly significantly with the addition of those AFL players. Salter and Hentschel holding down FF and CHB and playing well would make a huge difference to us. Broadbent always adds something (either in midfield or across half back) as well and releases McKenzie to use as we please which is a huge bonus.

As you've already written, Central will be well off with the inclusion of their AFL players. Probably more so than in other years.

Glenelg have the bonus of most of their qualified AFL players already playing for them so can settle the side down heading in to finals. Norwood in a similar situation with Will Young already playing.

Westies are a bit like the Eagles in that if they can somehow get Porplyzia and Davenport qualified to add to those already qualified they will be significantly boosted. Like the Eagles, they need that quality to cover the lack of depth the squad has in comparison to Central and Glenelg. Not sure it is justified those people saying they'd fear Sturt more than West in the finals.

Of course it all comes down to how much the AFL player wants to play for their SANFL club and then getting the right team mix to quickly produce in the pressure of finals football. There is no doubt though that an AFL quality player who is in for the right reasons increases the chances of bringing the Thomas Seymour Hill home to their club.

Just because a player qualifies, doesn't mean his AFL club will allow him to play. Believe me, Norwood people know this only too well.

Spot on AH don't get too excited just yet.
No Walker or Rohdan for Norwood that's for sure.

Thought Porplyzia was 3 or 4 because there was a time were he didnt play for west or the Crows plus he play ed at Norwood and Round 1

Aerie, I would be very surprised if Hentschel qualifies for the Eagles. Salter will be valuable though.

Barring injury, I think Hentschel will qualify for us ... he now needs to play 2 more games. I can't see him being promoted next week based on yesterday's performance (solid but not brilliant). To get back into the Crows he will need to replace a forward because Davis is probably next in line for promotion to the defence.

It does raise an interesting topic regarding playing people in different positions to their AFL team - Salter will play forward when he returns for us, Hentschel plays defence, and Banner plays in the reserves ;)

Someone was telling me yesterday that the crows think Burton can qualify for the Eagles. He was playing for the Eagles when he got injured so being an injured eagle he can qualify .If he was injured as a crow he would not .
No idea if thats right or not .

More to the point of this thread
How many of these players will need surgery according to the AFL clubs

Im always fascinated how theses players are seemingly always able to play until AC + PP are out of finals contention

Its more a case of these players needing surgery for minor injuries as soon as there season finishes so they can be ready for the next pre season. Makes sense from an AFL clubs point of view.

Makes sense ?
The same players are available all the way thru to the Grand Final for AC + PP and no operations in that time
Thier operations seemingly start when AC + PP are eliminated
Sometimes the AFL clubs dont give a rats if they faurrrk around the SANFL clubs
BUT
During the year they USE the SANFL clubs to rehab some players

WHUFC it might be fair for the AFL clubs
But it aint entirely fair to the SANFL clubs

Correct, but unfortunatly these players are on full time contracts to these AFL clubs so the AFL club will always come before the SANFL club.

I agree the AFL clubs do use the SANFL clubs but we also don't complain when a player comes back and kicks 5 goals or gets 30 possesion to win our club the game.

Also i think alot of these AFL players would prefer to have their surgery early and be ready for the next season at there full time career/job rather than risk further damage at a club that doesn't pay for the bills and the fancy car.

MAL, what is your solution?

short memories, If it wasn't for the Power Josh Carr may have never come back to the Bay, the bays weren't complaining either when they had Matty Bode playing for them while at the Crows. It works both ways you take the good with bad.

I would much rather see blokes like Daniel Schell, Nathan Steinberner, Jonathon Giles, Jay Nash, Brad Symes playing for the Dogs when they didn't play AFL than Coburg, Williamstown of Frankston.
