1.42 left and we're down 99-91 but we do have a chance as top scorer Catallini has fouled out for Cairns, pity he can't come on for his old team now. :(

No chance now.

Went to the Homes Dome for the 1st time in god knows how many years last night, and enjoyed the game (result aside) ... Our free throw shooting in the first half was appalling and we really should have been 10+ up at halftime, but Cairns with that extra class, always found a way to narrow the deficit in the final 2 minutes of each of the periods.

Now I'm no basketball expert, but I was a little disappointed with the General last night for two reasons:

1. At the beginning of the 3rd period we seemed to keep taking outside shots, most of which were low percentage and failed to score and this allowed Cairns to seize the momentum IMHO (Stewart destroyed us from downtown) - Given the Cairns lineup had about 6 more fouls than us and either 2 0r 3 to their best players, what was wrong with taking the ball in the paint more often to press home the foul advantage??

2. The technical he gave away in the final period when the Sixers were still well in the game is disappointing ... As a coach you demand discipline of your players, pretty poor when you can't lead by example IMHO.

Brett Maher is all class and always a pleasure to watch ... If Willie Farley hadthe same work rate he would probably be the best player in the country - A highly talented player no doubt, but a show pony quite often.

Thought "Geez we don't seem to have much depth these days" but then noticed Copeland, Wheeler and Nash all on the bench in civvies ... Those guys would actually make for a pretty formidable roster if injury free.

Few points from a former season ticket holder -

- outside shooting has always been part of the coaches game plan, hence we have never had a genuine centre

- Holmes, Ingles, Newley, Forman - all talented juniors that came through our system....none playing in SA, criminal

- add the above players to Maher, Farely, Nash, Ng and we have a young, talented, predominately SA based side for many years

- Interesting story about Newley, and I got this from one of his team mates here in the state league. Newley had arranged a meeting with Phil Smyth after approaching him....Phil Smyth never turned up or even called to apologise, the next day he signed with Townsville, he never wanted to leave SA but wasnt wanted...the next year he becomes MVP at the All star game

- I thought Smyth was great in the first 5-6 years but now is time to reinvigorate this club

Dutchy, wasn't you who rang Dumb and Dumber to discuss this last night?

I gotta admit, I'd always thought Smyth was an un-dethroneable king, but like you I've started to have my doubts in recent years.

We struggled so badly from outside last night with only Maher and a young lad (Sutton maybe?) looking like continual threats (I know Farley and Timmons dropped a couple, but looked like missing more often).

It made me think back to the "Golden Years" and I was trying to tell my other half that back then we had half the team lethal from outside ... Between Rillie, Maher, Brooks, Mee, Cattalini, Sapwell, Nash etc it was difficult to match up on all of them.

Also should add that there were plenty of bad calls and non-calls last night (probably a regular thing, I dunno?) and I'd suggest that Cairns got the slightly rougher end of the stick.

nah it wasnt me but I heard it and agreed, especially after watching Homes and Ingles play for South Dragons last night.

I think Adelaide United have cut into their crowds and hence their revenues (although I see there was 5500 there last night), my in-laws have been season ticket holders since the Apollo days but gave them up this year and go to the soccer, also the dwindling standard of the league has had an effect...and they are looking at bringing in more sides!!!
