I am think'n of never buying it again.

The Mail has stuffed it up so bad it is not worth getting anymore.

No Sports Lift-Out

Mrs_Dog_ger and I will eat our Dog_ger home made bacon & egg muffins & coffee, Sunday Mail free from now.

Even Mrs_Dog_ger doesn't like it.

Listened to the female boss of sunday mail on 5aa talk back radio and she said they will not change back.

No Problem. No Mail for us. :D ;)

I've just been sent an offer for the 7 days of the paper for $4.50 for 26 weeks or $2 for just Sat and Sunday. To be honest, I think I can do without it. My missus will still want to get the Sunday paper so she gets the TV book (still living in the 1980's my missus) but I prefer to read the news online these days. At least it's up to date.

I sent off an email complaining about NO Sports liftout, and received a reply within 5 mins shooting me down in flames

They told me that many discussion groups involving both sexes and 3 various age brackets, all resoundingly voted for the Advertiser style production with the Sport at the back

I go to the football just about every week with one of the sports editors at the Advertiser, he's a passionate and fantastic supporter of SANFL football and often manages to get some great local football articles into the paper. That said, I just think the Advertiser, Sunday Mail and the SANFL itself, have moved away from SANFL football and are almost completely focused and interested in the AFL and as long as the SANFL league doesn't fall over, don't really give a toss what is happening in the league. I think it is given scant regard these days, everyone has forgotten where football started and where the AFL sides came from. We're all dinosaurs, supporting the real league while the cattle/sheep just fawn over the corporate, no-emotion AFL league. Look at the fixtures, just another great example of the SANFL following AFL stupidity.

Having to turn back past a few other pages after the chock-a-block AFL section is yet another decline, yes. Remember this layout?

Image

That survived until 1997. Below that was the stats - quarter by quarter for kicks, marks and handballs. That lasted until 2000. When the Advertiser changed from broadsheet to tabloid during the 1997/98 off season, it coincided with all AFL games stats being included. I think it also gave the Advertiser the chance to condense the SANFL section to accomodate for this.

The Sunday Mail in 2003 had a liftout for football only. That lasted just that season. Then it was the dogs breakfast you see until now. The Advertiser since 2005 has massive pictures to get rid of print space for the SANFL section. Also, before this, if need be, the ladder was printed on the previous page, separate to the two page SANFL section.

Finally, the Advertiser and Sunday Mail stopped printing the first name initial on the stats a couple of years ago, to end up with the stupid listing of either Kane, Kane or Gowans, Gowans. No-one told you who Ben or Chris was or James and Chris.

From 1993 I reckon

How are the names in the 17s, Dew, Biglands, Lynch, Cluzak (C), Lindsay, Leal, Evans and Cockatoo-Collins

19s aren't bad either: Osborn, Cochrane, Vardy, Ottens (L) Marsh, S Freeborn, Floriani, White.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Nup Gibbsy was playing at Victor in 1995. Its either '93 or 1994.

My guess is 94.

I think Sheldrick was playing for Border Downs/Tintinara in late 93 (i presume he was there by round 14 of SANFL).

I also don't think Dew would have been playing 17's in 93, as he was born in 79, i don't think he was there as a 14 year old, although i guess thats possible.

You're right about Gibbs, his goalkicking heroics coincided with my first year in senior footy.
So it's 1994. Vardy is my age - playing 19s.

Great to see Frank Dolensky's name there too! The big fella!

Round 18 1994 to be precise. That day, the last two active players played in the League match between Sturt and Port - Andrew McLeod and Ben Nelson. Tyson Edwards played for West in the match you see above.

And which Mansell is that playing for Westies reserves...

If it's the Mansell I think it is, there's an interesting link between him and another player in that line-up....

They might have a rule that says "Unless otherwise notified, Cambo is leading the goalkicking", such is the frequency of it :D

I think we're fighting a losing battle with the mainstream stuff, need to get more people sponsoring the more independent publications
