Going Going Gone

Postby FOURTH ESTATE » Sun Jul 25, 2010 7:21 pm

Ovingham DEAD

Wingfield Royals & North Pines not far behind.

What do they have in common?

They were stand alone teams. Time for the SAAFL to wake up and realise that you must have a minimum of 2 sides to be in this league.

The rule must be changed or you end up with the diaster that we have seen this year in C1 & C2
2017, 2019 & 2020 PREMIERS
RICHMOND, RICHMOND, RICHMOND.

Let that be a lesson to you, Port Adelaide Sturt. & Norwood You don't beat Glenelg in Grand Finals and get away with it.

Don't necessarily agree with you.

St Paul's OS and Flinders Uni both existed as one-team clubs for a period during this decade and have competed well since going back to Division 7 with two teams.

Give these clubs a chance. However, should they be in C1? Maybe not.

poor result in the C4 this year, with Salisbury West & Pulteney nominating C grades, but not being able to put sides on the park left an 8 team competition.

Those two clubs not being able to field a team is one thing and certainly unfortunate but the really poor result is the SAAFL knew of this and decided not to have a full round of games every week instead, scheduling byes in a 10 team comp. Don't tell me it would've been too hard to have a re-think so as to enable blokes a game every week.

Spot on the money Q. Nth Pines never should have been put in C1. They finished in the bottom 2 of div 7 the year before, then lose enough players to mean they could only field 1 team. They were never going to be competetive against the teams in C1. What Ovies and Nth Pines needed was to go down to a lower C grade division so they could be at least competetive. This gives them a chance to rebuild. Far too hard to rebuild and attract players when you are being belted week in week out. Just my 2cents.

I know Ovingham were unhappy about being thrown in C1 as they asked Colonel Klink and the boys to be in a lower grade for those reasons and agree entirely that should North Pines and Ovingham have played this year, it should have been in a Grade where they were not going to get smashed each week. They maybe have started in C3 or C4 to kick start them again. Now it would appear the horse has bolted and will be hard to get back.

From what i was told reagrding this, the SAAFL asked all clubs if they wanted to change the program and they majority said no as it would upset triple headers etc. I know we wanted to change the schedule because we had the same thing happen last season.

If that's the case I stand corrected. Still doesn't excuse the clubs though. Players want to play footy & get value for money unless they reduced subs for the blokes in those teams.

what would've been wrong with the 2 teams who had the bye play each other?
even if only as sanctioned scratch matches?

Funny thing is PR we said we wanted to re-schedule, sounds like you guys would have been in favour so that is 2 out of the eight. We were told the majority didnt want this. I would have a guess to say that Uni and Salisbury would have been keen to change it so I actually cant see where the majority is?

im not really into scratch matches myself but can see how it would benefit the clubs. I feel for some of or B graders that get dropped, they have no game some times. Tough to get a re-call after that.

just for the record, Ovingham isn't dead, just resting for the remainder of 2010...

we have been approached by the army reserves (i think, our Pres had a quick chat to me and i can't remember exactly who it was) about helping us fill a side for 2011. i believe they have somewhere in the vacinity of 25-30 blokes. we have a meeting with them in the next week or so...

i understand that they may have exercises that will affect us on certain weekends but a very good start. add that to the recruiting we have done so far for next year and we should be right for a C3 or C4. maybe win a few games, get some more players and volunteers on board and look at 2 sides in 2012...

it is very very hard to get players that want to play for a side that is getting spanked every week...

i'm all for ovingham getting back on track but would like to see any stand alone side play in c1 - this will at least give them a taste of level required for higher grades ie div 7. you'll also find that the standard of c1-c4 is pretty similar across the board -having played, coached and watched plenty of it.

personally, i believe we'll see the end of the reflective nature of c grade sides, as the clubs wishing to push up to div 7 and the stand alone clubs are throwing too many spanners in the works. this would be a pity as the triple headers are preety good - but there's no reason that triple headers couldn't be held with different sides in them.

IF we can get enough numbers then we will definately be looking to Div 7. however to go straight there is very unlikely. we need to first be competitive in a C grade div before we move into that arena.

on the triple header side of things, i have no problems next year with looking to change location of games to allow for larger clubs to have triple headers. i can understand totally the reason behind them and the atmosphere would be great for us to play in front of. So whatever div we wind up in next year, whoever we're playing against should contact myself or David Slovinec (pres) and work out the dates...
