The three man interchange bench

Apart from the one off round in 1982 (Round 16), the first time the SANFL used three men on the interchange bench was the first week of the finals in 1995. The finals in 1995 were used as a trial for the third interchange player which came into effect the previous year in the AFL, and was fully implemented for 1996.

They did some unusual things in 1982. In round 11, Norwood played Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval, 14th June, and both sides had 21 players, whereas every other round they had 20. I'm not sure why they did this.

It was Round 11? That's what I meant, not Round 16.

Was it following a state game so teams that had lots of state players backing up, Norwood, Port, Glenelg Sturt etc, weren't disadvantaged by playing relatively fresher teams??

You are probably right. SA played WA two days before at Footy Park.

That seems extremley strange to trial a rule in a finals series.

I remember 95 extremly well the Dogs first ever GF but cant remember the rule change, what was the reaction from the partcipating finals clubs.

You are probably right. SA played WA two days before at Footy Park.

All teams had three on the interchange bench that day. It was the Queen's birthday weekend. North thrashed Torrens at Adelaide Oval. Greg McAdam and John Riley had played for the state two days before that and must have played on the Monday as well. That is something I don't remember, but I do remember that it was one of the first games where Grenville Dietrich kicked a bag of goals and it was has first winning SANFL match.

IIRC, his father died of - or suffered - a heart attack in the grandstand that day...
