Went to Hanoi, Halong Bay and Ho Chi Minh in January. Thinking of visiting Hoi An and Nha Trang in October. How long would you recommend in Hoi An and what would you recommend doing?

A week easy. Take in Da Nang & Hue whilst in the area.
Hue is a great place as well. The old Capital. Take in the Citadels (Royal & City). Royal Palace and temples/pagodas etc. Go on the Perfume River and visit the several Royal Tombs etc. The Dong Ba market is great. Try some local food. Check out the flag at night at the Citadel. Some great food to be found also.
You'll have to go through Da Nang to get to Hoi An. Stay a night, and that's about it. Not a hell of a lot to do.
Get to Hoi An, and it's game on ! There is plenty of halls, pagodas etc to check out. The Japanese covered bridge is worth a squiz. Dates back to 1593 ! Check out the Lantern shops. Fantastic ! Go to the markets as well, and like Hue this joint has great restaurants. Hire a Cyclo to take you around (fix price etc first). Head to to My Son. It's a World Heritage site, and some say more culturally significant the Angkor Wat. Hire a motor bike and ride to the beaches. Quite nice and the traffic isn't as hectic as other areas of 'Nam. "China" Beach is to the south of Danang, near the Marble Mountains and is worth checking out. We went there from Hoi An on a motorbike and made a day out of it. Great cheap restaurants near the beach too.
And last but not least. This is where you get your clothes tailor made. Easy as !
Hope that helps a tad !
