He was outstanding today considering he is not a natural ruckman.

Nor is he a natural forward, yet I see his square peg has been hammered quite snugly into that particular round hole...

West were sound for the secod and third quarters but who ever said they dont flood back wasn't at todays game, hey R&B? Fortunately for the spectators Port made several attempts to open the game up and it wasnt until the last 5 mintues did the game actually open up.

With 2 or 3 minutes to go Port hit the front by a goal ,West quickly replied and I thought a draw would be a fitting result, however a late snap proved to be the difference. Once again, very competitive without bringing home the chocolates.

Bravo to the lady in the Port Club who gave me a free pint or two. I think the Boon charm won her over.... ;)

Little bit drunk and I am about to cook chiekcn burgers for tea.

I'll bite, Booney. First, good to catch up.

I was at the game and given recent discussion, I took particular notice of any 'flooding'. West lined up with all forwards forward of the ball at stoppages and didn't tag anyone. Port the same, although they tagged Chris Schmidt all day.

There was no flooding, but both sides made sure they had plenty of numbers to the contest. that's the way footy is played now. I watched Sturt v Eagles yesterday and it was the same. Repeat, there was no flooding. When you sober up and read this, mate, I'll look forward to your reply ;)

As for the poster who asked about the dodgy last-quarter decisions, there could have been a riot if Port had won. With a few minutes to go and the scores level, West attacked and Jason Davenport took a chest mark within range and his Port opponent then took the ball out of his hands. Umpire came in and paid the mark, thank goodness.

To the Port bloke

Down the other end for a goal to Port.

I think even the most one-eyed Maggie fan wouldn't have claimed that mark.

Fortunately justice prevailed 8)

Seriously though, Port arren't far away and they're developing their young players well.

There have been many epic battles between these 2 teams at Alberton over the years but this game was not one of them. Close, yes, but this was a battle between 2 pretty ordinary teams and in the end the one that made less mistakes won, albeit in a pretty unconvincing manner.

Chubb didn’t play and so Webb came into the side with Hartlett moving back to CHB to stand the dangerous Cloke.

At the end of the 1st Q the score was Port 1.5 to Westies 1.4 with both teams wasting forward chances. Harding, Nat Caruso and Piasente got plenty of the ball but Westies couldn’t convert their efforts into goals. The second Q saw a gradual lift in tempo with the Bloods adding 5 but not until very late in the Q. Bennett kicked 2 after strong marks and looked dangerous. Half time Westies in front 6.6 to Port 4.7. While not overly convincing Westies looked to be gaining the upper hand in a tough, tight and error riddled contest.

The 3rd saw only one goal scored, to Westies, after another strong Bennett mark. He then blotted his copybook when he took another strong grab and missed from 20m out right in front. Westies had their chances to open up a good break in this Q but could not finish off and too often their forward thrusts ended with the Port defence driving the ball back from where it came. Jeremy Clayton left the field in this Q with an injured ankle. 3Q WA 7.7, PA 4.10.

The last Q saw a revived Port team playing on at every chance and outrunning a tired looking West outfit. Port booted 5 in this Q. At one stage they hit the front and playing with purpose and momentum looked to be winners. To their credit Westies hit back. Beech and Davenport goaled from good marks to keep us in the game. A free to Willets 50m out late in the Q, a straight kick and the scores were level and it looked that we , after leading all day, would be lucky to get out with a draw. It was beyond the 30 min mark when Westies won the centre clearance, a snap by Ryan Anderson out of a desperate pack of about 20 players and Westies were in front by a goal and 30 secs later the siren sounded with the ball on the Port half fwd line. Final score WA 11.8 to Port 9.14.

With 23 shots to 19 Port had their chances. They were unlucky to lose after such a spirited fightback late in the game. This is not the first time this has happened to the Bloods. After outplaying their opponents for 3 Qs they stop in the last. It happened against both Norwood and Port earlier in the season. The umpiring was mystifying and for the 3rd week in a row Westies bore the brunt of some dreadful officiating. Umpire Manikas was especially bad as he imposed his pedantic interpretations on a tight and tough contest.

Westies again suffered from an inconsistent team effort. Most players did some good things but more bad things. Nearly all of them fumbled the ball and allowed Port to gain possession from their mistakes. They are also handball happy and too often their attacks fail because of one (or three!) handballs too many. Harding, Davenport, Nat Caruso, Champion, Ezard, Beech, Morris, Bennett all did some good things but made bad mistakes as well. Many of our players fell out of the game for long periods. Only a few players stood out because of a solid 4 Q effort. Piasente has, arguably, been our best player all year. Silvester just keeps getting better. He is a solid, no frills backman but is a rock on the last line. Hartlett played probably his best game for the club. He beat Cloke on the day and started many attacks through his endeavour and discipline. Finally, Willets took on one of the best ruckmen in the SANFL in Meikeljohn and also, at times, had to contend with the huge Cloke. He didn’t win the ruck but he did a stirling job nullifying their effectiveness. Interestingly Willets is heavier than both of them. Bennett booted 3 and Beech and Davenport 2 apiece.

The 2s won 12.9 to 9.8.

Anyone know what happened to Clayton? I saw him limp off in the third quarter and have heard that he has done his knee.

The club said last night that they expect it to be his ACL.

If that is the case, thats a real shame. Despite the rumours regarding where he may or may not play out the rest of the year, this is a terrible injury to an experienced match winner. I hope for both him and PAFC that it is not as serious

I think JC might have pretty much known this as they came off the ground...

Hope we haven't seen the last of him.
