Finding out I've got something called temporomandibular joint disorder. :( Having to wait a week to find out what the cause of it is and thus how to treat it. :(( Back on the Panadeine Forte for me...

TMJ is a bitch - I got it after my 2nd sinus operation

Almost feels like lockjaw sometimes and can give you ripper headaches that almost feel like miagraines except most of the pain is just below the temple or right at the base of the ear.

A mixture of joint specific exercises and drugs did the trick although I can't remember how long it took to go away.

Oh good, so it does get better? That's a relief. I googled TMJ and of course I got all these American websites with people complaining 'I've had TMJ for twenty years and it never gets better and I've had three surgical procedures and now I'm addicted to Xanax' so I was a bit worried! I definitely don't want to have it for ever because it REALLY HURTS.

It is really a cluster of symptoms rather than a single disease and there can be various underlying causes with there own treatments.
I started to get symptoms when my jaw was over closing after I'd ground down my teeth in my sleep over several years without realising it.
The solution was the expensive one of getting most of my teeth crowned and using a mouth guard at night to protect them from suffering the same fate.
I could have gone the cheaper route of false teeth but it has been worth it in the long run.

That other cause of chronic pain "Fibromyalgia" is similar - not a specific disease but a set of symptoms with various underlying causes.
In my case it was an allergic reaction to the industrial pollution where I was living and the solution was moving house, after which it all went away.
