This was a dour, tight and tough contest between two evenly matched teams. Westies were superior in areas such as defensive strategies, toughness, endeavour and determination, Norwood superior in footspeed, skill and the capacity to take a grab in their forward line. Westies let themselves down with dreadful disposal causing countless turnovers and Norwood lacked the ability to convert possession into scoreboard pressure.
At half time only four goals had been scored in total. At 3Q time only seven goals had been scored but both teams then doubled their score in a frantic last Q.
In the end it came down to one very dubious umpiring decision when Chris Schmidt attempted to spoil a Norwood player on the eastern wing. At this point, 20 mins into the last Q, the scores were level. The umpire intervened in the contest, reported Schmidt, gave a 50m penalty resulting in a shot from the goal square. Norwood gained valuable momentum, booted another and Westies went down in a very disappointing result for the club.
When the Westies coaching staff review the match they will lament the poor disposal and decision making. Bricknell, on several occasions steaming out of the backline and delivering a beautiful long kick to a Norwood player standing by himself. Ryan Bennett running into the fwd line, propping, attempting to handball behind him and being caught holding the ball. Norwood goal. Daniel Caire handballing to a Norwood player, goal.
Q by Q scores:
1Q Nwd 1.3, WA 0.1, Half time Nwd 2.3, WA 2.3, 3Q Nwd 4.5, WA 3.5, Final Nwd 8.6, WA 6.6.
Porplyzia kicked 2 and singles to Birss, Champion, Anderson and Munn.
Ryan Anderson played probably his best game for the club. Chubb and Steven Morris played with great focus and endeavour, Chubb spent time both back and forward. You have to love the way Morris approaches a contest. Munn, Hartlett and Silvester did some good things. Porplyzia showed his class and we would have been worse off but for his finishing skills. Harding seemed to get better as the game went on. Webb had a shocker. He sometimes looks very disinterested and quite slow. The 2 Carusos struggled to get into the game and Ryan Bennett couldn’t continue his form from last week. Fielke and Champion did a few good things but lack consistency.
Westies fans will watch with interest the outcome of Schmidt’s report. If he is let off then the umpire should be dropped, such was the impact of his decision on the game.
