2009 Draft picks----Have they played??

Postby brod » Sat Jun 12, 2010 11:47 am

An interesting stat--

Of the 5 players selected by the Crows in the 2009 National Draft, they have played a combined total of 1 GAME, not surprising this puts them 16th, only just behind...the Power

48 games (9 picks) Richmond
28 games (7 picks) Fremantle
25 games (5 picks) Carlton
24 games (7 picks) North Melbourne
22 games (6 picks) Melbourne
17 games (6 picks) Hawthorn
16 games (6 picks) Sydney
11 games (6 picks) Brisbane
11 games (4 picks) Essendon
11 games (4 picks) Collingwood
11 games (6 picks) St Kilda
6 games (6 picks) Geelong
6 games (6 picks) WBulldogs
5 games (3 picks) WCEagles
4 games (5 picks) Port
1 game (5 picks) Adelaide

The Crows sit
13th for games played by 2008 National Draftees
6th for games played by 2007 National Draftees (had the most picks of any team)

The Power sit
6th for games played by 2008 National Draftees
15th for games played by 2007 National Draftees

Yeah good observation. The Crows just are very, very hesitant to give the youngsters, especially 1st years, a go. I mean we're 3-9, sitting 15th, and we still don't want to give them a shot. Gunston should be playing every week, Talia would've but is now injured. Craig won't play one and Shaw might, but if he does it'll be around Round 19-22.

pretty harsh NFC, the Crows have had 7 Debutants this year and Matty Wright is close and Sammy Shaw will play a couple of games in the ladder half of the year
I love vegatarian food. It goes great with steak.

Yes I agree, I was just saying 2009 draftees! :)

We've done well in blooding new players, the key over the next 10 weeks is to leave blokes like Sloane, Armstrong and Henderson in the side whilst also getting more games into Gunston, Cook, Jaensch and co. It's got to be about the kids and getting experience into them for 2011, we'll be better off for it.

One thing that contributes to these stats is the consistancy of the team week in week out. It was getting the job done and the next level of player (higher than the draftees) was filling the void. Now these young blokes are getting a crack early as there is a need for them. Yes NC doesnt like throwing the kids in until he thinks they are ready but the sucess has contributed IMO.

Draft picks stats dont mean a lot over the course of one year. Go back a few years and it tells a better story. You'd think that the SA teams would have played more youngsters considering they are both struggling.

This doesnt make sense Booney, in recent years the crows have been sucessful (during the minor round yes yes i know we arent as good as the Cats ;) ) and the squad has had some depth with second tear players. Hence the low number of draftees played. Now the crows are struggling and the draftees are getting a crack. The stats above mean little IMO

A very good observation, and a valid point in Adelaide's weakness in recruiting.

Here are the players selected AFTER Daniel Talia that have seen some time this year.

Lewis Jetta
Nathan Fyfe
Ryan Bastinac
Mitch Duncan
Jeromely Webberley
Ben Nason

Go through the years at some players we missed for Phil Davis 2008:
Sidebottom, Ballantyne, Zaharakis, Beams, Hanneberry

2007 was ok picking up Dangerfield & Otten.

2006 we took James Sellar ahead of Renouf, Pettard, Alwyn Davey, Krakouer, Hawkins, Houli, Dick, Reimers, Lindsay Thomas, Gray, Hill, Jesse White.

Can we not develop players as well, or do we need to take a good look at our pre-requizites in recruiting??

I think you can go through any teams selections and say look who went after this person etc etc I think our selections in the last few years have been reasonable, with our emphasis on getting height rather than your Davey's, Jetta's etc etc

I think you also need to include the number of players from the picks who have played
eg
6 games (6 picks) Geelong - 1 player or 6 players have played?
