Monty Panesar will get an early chance to impress the England selectors after being named in the England Lions side to face Bangladesh in a four-day match at the County Ground in Derby starting on May 19.

Panesar has not played any cricket for England since the first Ashes Test last summer and was not chosen for either of England's overseas tours over the winter. Having moved counties during the off-season Panesar has enjoyed a good start with Sussex this season. He now gets a chance in a team captained by Alastair Cook, who led England in place of the resting Andrew Strauss during their recent tour of Bangladesh.

England Lions: Alastair Cook (captain, Essex), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Michael Carberry (Hampshire), Steven Davies (Surrey), Andrew Gale (Yorkshire), James Harris (Glamorgan), Steve Kirby (Gloucestershire), Monty Panesar (Sussex), Liam Plunkett (Durham), James Taylor (Leicestershire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).

Shamsur Rahman, the uncapped right-handed batsman, will leave for England to join the Bangladesh Test squad which has been hit by fitness issues. Rahman, 21, was included after the captain Shakib Al Hasan was diagnosed with chicken pox and the team's leading batsman Tamim Iqbal in doubt with a wrist injury

Andy Flower's stated determination to rest his key players in a bid to avoid burn-out ahead of this winter's Ashes and World Cup could become apparent when the squad for next week's first Test against Bangladesh at Lord's is unveiled on Sunday morning. Stuart Broad, the fast bowler with an integral role in all three forms of the game, seems sure to be given a break from the front line, while Paul Collingwood - the man who last week lifted the World Twenty20 trophy in Barbados - is also expected to make way.

With Andrew Strauss returning to lead the side for the first time since the tour of South Africa in January, and James Anderson also back in the reckoning having sat on the sidelines during the Caribbean tour, England have been presented with a range of options against a Bangladesh side that, to judge from their ineffectual efforts against the Lions in Derby this week, are unlikely to prove the same sort of obstacle that they were in their own conditions in Dhaka and Chittagong in March.

Tim Bresnan has been ruled out of the second Test against Bangladesh at Old Trafford on Friday, after suffering a stress fracture in his left foot during England's eight-wicket win in the first Test at Lord's. Ryan Sidebottom has been drafted in as a replacement to an otherwise unchanged England squad.

A little bit surprised to not see Trott getting the Man of the Match Award after scoring his 226.

Tamim Iqbal ignited the fourth day's play at Lord's with a second-innings 103 and has now jumped six places among the world's leading batsmen to No.25, his highest ranking.

Tamim hit 55 in the first innings of the opening Test, making it five scores over fifty in his last six Test innings against England. His reward is a place in the top 30 list of batsmen which is still headed by India's Virender Sehwag

Is this something the Aussies can take out of this series...the Pommie opeing bowlers are not that good???

With the pitch being a road it was surprising to see Bangladesh decide to send England into bat first.
Cheers

Just read an article on Cricinfo.com, saying that the last time an English Test team had eleven "English born" players was in Galle, in 2003!

And that was only because the skipper (Indian born Nasser Hussain) was out injured...

I'm genuinely surprised that it's so recent.

If I'd had to guess, I would have been going back to the days before Alan Lamb.
