highest and lowest number of points to make the finals

OK Spelly an easy one because I'm sure we've done it* before:

Since we've gone to a 20 game (23 round) season what is the highest number of points a team has had (wins and draws) when finishing 5th and what has been the lowest points tally for the team finishing 5th (i.e. just scraping into the five). Also what is the median or mode number of points for the team finishing 5th since the 20 game (23 rd) season was introduced.

This stems from the thread on the main board about Sturt making the finals.

And yes I know 2003 was a final four but still interested in the wins/draws (points) of Port who finished 5th.

So, 16 points is the lowest and 24 is the highest. 22 being the median and mode.

Thanks for that Spelly not too shabby 31 mins, supplementary question how many times has the team finishing 6th had 10 wins or the equivalent of 10 wins? Or in the case of 1993, 1997 or 1999 11 wins?

1999: West and Central had 10 wins in 6th and 7th - doesn't that seem like a long time ago!
2006: Glenelg with 10 wins

Thanks for that, so in a nutsell only once in 15 years would 8.5 wins get you a finals spot, the aveage number of points of 5th placed teams is 21 and the median number of points is 22 (11 wins). So history says to be reasonably sure to make the finals you need 11 wins.

I'm tipping this year 10 wins will be enough.

Another extension to this question -
What's the highest number of points gained while still coming bottom, and
the lowest number of points to come top (get a week off) and
the lowest number of points to come third (get a double chance)?

With the current evenness of the comp, those stats would be interesting too.

Next one - another extension.

Who were the worst performed team to 1. make the GF & 2. win the flag. Sides sneaking into 4th or 5th place, then striking form in September.

Then I guess the next question - the "best " performed side in the minor round who went out in straight sets and didn't make the GF. Any undefeated sides?

Norwood in 1993 had 12 wins in the minor round as well as 1999, as did Central in 2006. Central only needed 14 wins to make the GF; Norwood 15 on both occasions - Central were 3rd and Norwood 4th in 1993 and 5th in 1999 to make that difference.

Port in 1998 had 12 wins in the minor round, then won the four necessary finals to claim the flag.

Out of the four teams to miss the Grand Final after finishing top in a final five system; Glenelg had the best record with 17 wins and a draw.
