Ive seen people like this quit/retire to shove it up the employer, only for more redundancies to be offered in the next 12 months, sometimes its better to just stick around, esp in the current environment.

In my job, in recent years, if you have a sick day no one does your work and you just end up with 2 days worth of work when you return, so you end up turning up to work unless you are completely stuffed.

Agree and very likely. Unfortunately he is not willing to have a conversation about it.
