it is a tough one for the government, as they cant be helping every single business that gets in trouble, however with 110,000 kids in their care it is the responsible thing to do for a limited time to ensure normal business can proceed, they already give over 50% of ABC's income already so they have that stake in the business also.

The government probably had a role to play in their domination of the market and could have stopped it via the ACCC but didnt....and this is the mess they are left with...

Believe it. For the same reason that the govt is pouring money into banks to keep them solvent, and into the dollar to keep it buoyant.

It must be nice to have a business whose service is so essential that you can afford to run that company with reckless abandon, safe in the knowledge that the government will not let your business go under, no matter how badly you screw it over.

There were a lot of takeovers in amongst the growth of ABC, shrek. The Govt should have been watching this a lot closer than they have. Banks who have lent money to ABC are partially to blame here as well, anyone who told me there could be economies of scale in child care would be asked to explain in every detail - smaller operators have a much better chance of long term survival in this industry.

Yeah but you can't just stop takeovers willy nilly. They're letting Westpac and St George merge, buying a few Childcare centres here and there is small bickies.

Oops. Was thinking more of the septic government bailing out financial institutions over there; though the govt here has at least guaranteed deposits. It boils down to the same reason that kids centres will be kept afloat here: the social cost of letting them sink would be far greater than the monetary cost in keeping them running. Like I said, must be nice to be in charge of such businesses.

Where the hell did you pull 90% from?

Anyway you can't just say 'sorry, you're getting too big stop now' to companies.

I suggest you look at the purposes of the Trade Practices Act before stating the government should/could have stopped it.
