And Victor Harbor is not on the road to Melbourne like the Gold Coast is to Sydney. ;)

I think for a start you need to introduce compulsory council voting. Might kick some of the dead beats out of the chambers that get to comfortable down there. its compulsory up here.

Melbourne has such good air quality you can't even see the CBD until you get to Footscray for all the smog.
Great choice
It is horses for courses I guess.
My judgement is based on personal experience and influenced by personal sensitivities:
1. My wife's asthma gave her less trouble during our 10 years in Melbourne than it did here - even when we lived in an inner area - Malvern.
2. My own tendency to skin and upper respiratory tract issues did better there too - here I have to live outside the city.

I agree that Melbourne's skies look grey from outside, but Melbourne is much more clear on the eastern side than in its west.
[Although my wife was reasonably OK in Point Cook visiting friends too, but that may have just been a few good days.]

Adelaide's skies tend to be brown in the Summer and the murk never seems to clear.
That may be an effect of the hills forming a bowl into which the prevailing wind blows.
I had hoped to be able to live somewhere like Stonyfell, when I returned in 2009.
But, while staying with friends there while house hunting in January 2009, I developed the chronic cough that I never had in Melbourne within a few days.
[Admittedly, not as severely as when I stayed with friend in Davoren Park.]

How dare a survey show that Sydney isn't the greatest place in the world! It must be wrong!!

I know so many people from Adelaide who have moved to Sydney over the years and raved about how great it is for career, nightlife, beaches, events etc. in the first few months. With the exception of 1 or 2, every single one of them are now back in Adelaide citing affordability, relaxed lifestyle etc. I live in the heart of the McLaren Vale wine region and (despite it's recent massive population growth) I think it is great. Countless local wineries, restaurants, cafes etc., 10 mins to the beach (Pt. Noarlunga, Moana, Aldinga, Maslins ;) , etc), 30 mins to Victor, 40 mins (on a good day) to the CBD. Very 'livable'.

I love Adelaide because my family, friends dogs etc are all here.

BUT this place is a hole.

Crap casino, no riverside dining in city, footy stadium in middle of nowhere, can't build a building more than 3 stories without approval, our city skyline looks sh!t, public transport is a joke, roads are designed for 600,000 people, North-South sprawl getting ridiculous instead of urdan development, South Rd is possibly the biggest bottleneck Main Road on Earth, no dining establishment is open past 10pm ever, the nightlife is dead apart from the month of March, we don't have a powerful industry as most big companies are not based in Adelaide & never will be, we have nothing near us (Perth or Melbourne??), bands miss us, Oprah doesn't know we exist :) , and we are only known as city of churches.

We have miles to go to be a better city.

They look brown when you look down from the hills as you are driving in. I first noticed it in the early 1980s.
Melbourne's look grey from the same perspective.
From underneath it you don't see those effects because you are inside them.

I'm in Adelaide now because all my remaining family, and my old friends, are here.
There was not much for me in Melbourne after my wife died in 2008.
I can cope with the air problems here by living in the hills and just visiting the city as necessary..
And Adelaide is so much easier to get around in than the big cities.

Travelling internationally for the first time last year made me realise how lucky we are here.

I love Adelaide so much because it isn't Sydney, London, Paris, Rome etc.

The world is a pretty chaotic place, and for me Adelaide is an oasis to all that.

It's great to dive into the chaos occasionally and travel, or even live for a time in the bigger interstate cities or overseas. However it's always a wonderful relief to return to Adelaide and the simple lifestyle it offers.

not a bad place at all i reckon.
just push city development ahead (ie adelaide oval and developments) and it will be even better.

Disagree with all but crap roads and public transport and some bands not coming here.
Big buildings doesn't mean better city. Adelaide was built according to a vision from Colonel light with the park lands. It is in actual fact considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
The casino is limited, its basically a pokie lounge as they all are these days. It is better than Brisbanes which is poor, and Gold Coast's which is also crap.
The nightlife is what you make of it anywhere you are. Been to Melb, Bris, Gold Coast on numerous occasions and it really isnt better in my opinion and those of friends i've had discussions with about this.

I firmly believe if people arent happy here, easy option......leave!!! You'll be back

I've lived in Melbourne for a third of my life and can't see me going back to Adelaide. And I LOVE Adelaide. Hell, my ancestors arrived in 1839. I am a croweater through and through, but every time I go back and visit I feel Adelaide getting further and further behind the Eastern states with each visit.
I stay at my mum's which is considered inner city North, but gees sometimes when I'm there I feel like I'm on the moon. Walkerville is a beautiful suburb, close to the city with reasonable amentities, but let's be honest it's the world's first above ground cemetery. Prospect is also beautiful and again close to the city but it's become one giant nursing home. I could go on.
Just finally. Um....you know that whole going out and leaving the house thing that people do?? Well, it's not just for weekends you realise? ;)
To the day I die I will say "dar-nce", go to the "deli", and avoid "stobie poles" when driving but I'll be doing it whilst dealing with "Vic pricks" !!
