Half fun, half serious poll. Inspired by a couple of English classes I taught recently in Japan.
We had been talking about Aliens and, to cut a long story short, only one person out of about 10 that I asked claimed to believe in Aliens. Now, Japanese people don't like being outside "the group", as in most Asian cultures, so I guess that claiming to believe in Aliens is one of those things that potentially puts you on the whacky list in some people's eyes. So I thought that perhaps the fear of being looked on as a whacko deterred most of my students from answering in the affirmative.
Australians are a lot more individualistic than Japanese, so I thought it would be a good comparison if I did a poll.
Peresonally I do believe that there is other life out there. As others have stated, there are just too many worlds in too many planetary systems in too many galaxies for there not to be Aliens.
I read in a scientific journal recently that they discovered the basic ingredients for life (water, heat and a couple of other things that I forget) on a moon orbiting Saturn. They claimed volcanic activity on that moon keeps the place pretty warm. If they are right, that makes at least two places within our own solar system capable of spawning life. Then there are all those theories about Mars. With an infinite universe out there I would be very surprised if there was no other planet where intelligent life has developed.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail
