2010/11 NHL season

Postby Brucetiki » Sat Feb 12, 2011 5:11 pm

Anyone here follow the NHL. I've taken a bit of an interest this year, and following the Penguins. Unfortunately Fox Sports only show the 2-3 games a week, so most of it is live scores online and YouTube clips after the event.

This morning Pittsburgh got killed by the New York Islanders (the South Adelaide of the NHL) 3-9, but the game will be more remembered for the continued fighting and brawling throughout the game.

Here's one from the third period

Some more footage of the earlier carnage. For the record Pittsburgh finished the game with just 2 players on the bench (and 4 on the ice)!

Match summary, including penalty summary (some light reading there lol) - 303 minutes in penalties handed out (not bad for a 60 minute game)

As a Penguins fan, I share that pain today. However, the footage of the brawling has eased that pain somewhat.

Don't really follow the NBA, though I was a Sonics fan before they disappeared (and only found out a few weeks ago they no longer exist - shows how much I follow it  ). Now that they're gone, I dont follow any team. Also never really followed any particular Major League side, but keeping with my Pittsburgh theme will probably loosely follow the Pirates this season.

The NHL has handed out its punishment for the Pittsbugh v New York Islanders brawls - http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=552570

Pittsburgh's Eric Godard got an automatic 10 game suspension for leaving the bench to become involved in a fight. New York Islanders Trevor Gillies got a 9 game suspension and New York Islander's Matt Martin got 4 matches, both for repeated blows to the head of Pittsburgh players. New York Islanders have been seen as the cheif instigators of the brawling throughout the match and copped a $100 000 fine as a result.

Really got into the NHL a while ago. Always been a Predators fan. They've never been particularly good but came into existence around the time I started following the sport.

Also liked the story behind their name (apparently they found the fossilised bones of a 'predator' while they were building their arena).

This thread has sparked my interest again, might have to keep a bit closer eye on things this season. :D

Following on from the US-based Winter Classic, it's now Canada's turn to host an outdoor hockey match with their Heritage Classic between Montreal and Calgary on 20 February. This will be the second time ever an outdoor NHL game has been played in Canada (the only other one was the inaugral Heritage Classic back in 2003).

http://www.nhl.com/ice/eventhome.htm?lo ... assic/2011

With the game being shown on Versus there's a chance that the game may be televised here (Fox Sports over here only shows the games Versus covers, although they did do the NBC-covered Winter Classic).
