Tigers clinch thriller
Tasmania has jumped into second spot on the Pura Cup table after beating Victoria by three wickets in a thrilling finish to their encounter at Bellerive Oval.
Chasing 314 for outright points on the final day after earlier dismissing Victoria for 338 in its second dig, the Tigers were never really troubled until late in the day, losing seven wickets in pursuit of the runs with just two balls to spare.
With scores level, a no-ball from Victorian paceman Shane Harwood handed the Tigers victory as Brett Geeves (two not out) and Sean Clingeleffer (two not out) hung on to see their side home.
George Bailey (52) and man-of-the-match Luke Butterworth (26) looked like they would guide Tasmania past the total but they both lost their wickets in the second-last over of the day.
Michael Dighton led the Tasmanian scoring with 66 before he was caught in the 63rd over by Lloyd Mash from the bowling of Jon Moss after a skied mis-hit to mid-on.
Travis Birt was the next to go the following over, when he was run out by Adam Crosthwaite for 46.
Earlier, Moss captured the wicket of Michael Di Venuto for 30, while Tim Paine scored 46 before he was bowled by Andrew McDonald.
Besides the medium-pacers of Moss, the only bowler to trouble the Tigers' batsmen was Mick Lewis, who picked up 2-73.
Victoria had started the day at 7-311 but lost its last three wickets for just seven runs as it collapsed to be all out for 338.
Moss scored 17, including three fours, before he was out to a sensational caught and bowled from Butterworth (2-80).
Tigers quick Ben Hilfenhaus then wrapped up the tail, capturing the wickets of Shane Harwood for one and Darrin Pattinson for two.
Rob Quiney (82), stand-in skipper David Hussey (80) and all-rounder Andrew McDonald (59) all made half-centuries, while Michael Klinger (41) and Nick Jewell (27) helped push the Bushrangers total beyond 300 on day three.
The Tigers bowlers toiled hard, with captain Dan Marsh (2-42) denying both Quiney and Hussey centuries, and Brett Geeves (2-78) and Ben Hilfenhaus (4-82) also having success.
